(Reuters) - U.S. deaths from the novel coronavirus topped 140,000 on Saturday as cases continued to rise in 42 out of 50 states over the past two weeks, according to a Reuters tally.

Since late June, the United States has seen a resurgence in new cases and now, six weeks later, deaths have also begun rising, according to a weekly Reuters analysis of state and county data.

America is losing about 5,000 people to the virus every week. By contrast, neighboring Canada has reported total deaths of 8,800 since the pandemic started.

In just one week, the United States records about as many deaths as the 5,600 lives Sweden has lost since the pandemic began earlier this year.

In the hardest-hit U.S. counties, officials are running out of places to store bodies as their morgues fill up.

Arizona's Maricopa County, home to the state's largest city, Phoenix, is bringing in 14 coolers to hold up to 280 bodies and more than double morgue capacity ahead of an expected surge in coronavirus fatalities, officials said on Thursday.

In Texas, the city of San Antonio and Bexar County have acquired five refrigerated trailers to store up to 180 bodies.

The appearance of such mobile morgues has fed the sense in some Southern states that the pandemic appears to be spinning out of control.

Part of that comes from the perceived independence attitude....

The I don't need a mask, I'll go where I want - when I want & how I want, coupled with the necessary reopening of the economy & unrestricted movement is working against them.....Hordes of agitators running amuck/looters/criminals released/political gaming; the police being forced to stand down and watch = it's going to get worse.....

We were planning on going from Aug to Jan = not now - looking pretty damn good right here...

I recognize the justified frustration/anger within the working middle class but they are emotionally flailing about at anything/everything. Until the USA addresses the underlying issue of the gross income/wealth gap disparity, allowing for the inequities, the madness will continue ...

Heart attack,  Corona death

Cancer, Corona death.

Car accident, Corona death.

It appears there is a correlation between gross stupidity and Corona infection/death.

A Pastor who was a fun idea  the warnings and put his faith in ‘God’s protection’ and a young man who thought attending a Coronavirus party being two examples.

But there are many others:

Ignoring scientific/medical advice.

Confusing wearing a mask as an assault on one’s freedoms.

etc.

Oh and I suspect deaths in car accidents are down on seasonal averages.

nature is way smarter than most people.  it was there before us and it will be there long after we're toast. Faced with that as an enemy, most lazy, ignorant, or just plain incompetent governments around the world have failed. for example, The UK Health Minister wants to use a different method of counting - to revise downwards the number of reported covid deaths. The Florida governor says he wasn't informed about something to do with controlling the virus until recently (a lie); so its not his fault. as we say in Thailand - you couldn't make it up. stay safe, everyone at TV.

But didn't they predict a death toll of 2 million minimum? This must be a huge disappointment to many.

No they did not.

Although the number of cases continue to rise, it appears the mordibity rate is dropping significantly. What is that all about?

Americans need to figure out the difference between liberty and responsibility.

And nobody is talking about diet, or factors contributing to the massive caseload. It is all a discussion of the external. America is a spectacularly weak society and culture.

IIRC early predictions were for about 120,000. In a wave of irrational optimism that was lowered to 60,000 to 80,000.  Unfortunately we will easily blow past 140,000 due to the ongoing surge.

OTH, the US has kept its death toll relatively low. It is still below the EU core 6 countries of Germany, Switzerland, Spain, France, Italy and UK with 150,000 deaths. The EU Core 6 has an equivalent population to the US. But the EU has mostly flattened out so US fatalities will soon surpass them.

Hey the blonde spokes person for Donald said the USA is number 1 with

the virus. I do believe her, and it will be number one in deaths as well

if they keep needing their freedom more than they need wearing masks

or trying to not catch the virus, but more importantly not spreading it to their

elderly family members who will likely keep dying in large numbers.

Good luck USA, you certainly need as much of it as you can get.

Geezer

Fake News from that horrible media that doesn't like me. If we stop testing there won't be as many cases.

Its the Democrats fault they started the hoax.It will just vanish! one day.

You mean you wanted to return to Chiang Mai just as the Burning Season begins???

Yeah, (this time around) the wife loves the winter season & wanted to experience the entirety of the season including Christmas & New Year's eve....

There's a dimming possibility of going later, but, it looks like it is going to stay chaotic worldwide....
