"I trusted my Burmese maid like my daughter" - but she steals nearly 2 million in jewelry

No Thai maid would ever do such a thing ????

In the days when Thai maids were still readily available I heard many stories of thefts from employers by Thai maids. They would usually just go and hang out in their villages, safe in the knowledge that there was no cooperation between police forces on crimes like that and that Bangkok cops had no budget to travel, unless the victims paid them.

I remember a Malaysian friend was told by the local police colonel that under Thai law he couldn't investigate the case of theft of some of her family heirlooms by her maid because foreigners would cause problems by being back in their own country and not showing up in court.  A few days later she found herself at a dinner with Anand Panyarachun who was prime minister at the time. She asked Khun Anand if it was true that the theft could not be legally investigated. The police colonel soon found he had a new posting to the Northeast and the maid was surprised to be arrested in her own village.  But that was a very rare case.

However, a police investigation soon revealed that the maid, and later with the help of her younger sister, had masterminded an inside job and stolen gold jewelry and other items worth nearly two million baht.

Keep temptation out of harms way....

Is this a rule of poor women?

Not always although during my bar-hopping days a fair proportion seemed to be drawn to it. A friend of gf is married to a well-off farang, she blew several hundred thousand baht on cards with other Thai girls when they lived out in Dubai. The difference there being it didn't lead to crime.

Here in the UK, where gambling is more freely available and marketed, women are specifically targeted by daytime gambling ads on TV for online bingo etc. Read about one woman recently who blew £650k on bingo and slots. You can find other cases on Google or YouTube if you look into it. Compulsive gambling can affect both sexes and not always poorer people.

I have a 'friend' with a Burmese maid whom she pays 3000 thb per month.

Your 'friend' deserves to be robbed by said maid. That's just taking advantage. ????

Never trust anyone,Don't lend any more money then you can afford to lose.

Never lend you're car or missus,,,,, you will get them back Both F,,,,d

This is special place where the girls/men, the money no have value and ussualy girls with low education.. Two “friends” of mine left their wifes because of gambling problems. One of them living in Pailín (frontier cambodia- Thailand) where  The Thais Crossed the border go to casino spend all money that they can/have without control. At the end with debits; steal money to their husbands, loosing cars...goods... divorce

A small, loose, cheap safe with that amount of cash and valuables in it, is inane and reckless behavior. Why not spend 10,000 or more on a good safe, that is bolted to the floor, like many of us do? Safes are inexpensive here.

We have the same maid we have been using for years. As far as I know, she is entirely trustworthy. But, we still keep valuables locked up in a good safe, when she is around, and do the same with all workers who come into our home. Seems like a basic common sense precaution. Why create a temptation like that? Two million baht is a fortune for someone making a few hundred baht a day.

Complacency is a disease. Some simply have no perspective of their station in life, relative to the masses.

Some safe if 2 women can open it with a crow bar and knife.

Apparently before the invention of the crow bar, they all used to drink at home.

It takes that and more to remove an elastic band from a bag of food

Unless some guy knows the maid and hopes she rips his clothes off?

That would be a Burmese maiden.
