Trump says coronavirus vaccine possible before Nov. 3

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday it was possible the United States would have a coronavirus vaccine before the Nov. 3 election, a more optimistic forecast on timing than anything suggested by his own White House health experts.

Asked on the Geraldo Rivera radio program when a vaccine might be ready, Trump said, "Sooner than the end of the year, could be much sooner."

"Sooner than November 3?" he was asked.

"I think in some cases, yes possible before, but right around that time," Trump said.

Later at the White House, Trump said he was optimistic a vaccine would be available around that date. Asked if it would help him in the election, he said, "It wouldn't hurt. But I'm doing it, not for the election; I want to save a lot of lives."

Trump, who is seeking re-election to a second term amid a U.S. economy crippled by coronavirus shutdowns, has pushed for schools to reopen and things to get "back to normal" as coronavirus deaths in the country average more than 1,000 per day.

Top government health officials have said corners would not be cut in the race to secure a vaccine against the virus.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. government infectious diseases official, offered a more conservative view in a Reuters interview on Wednesday, saying there might be an indication that at least one vaccine works and is safe by year end.

The frenetic race to develop a COVID-19 vaccine has intensified safety concerns about an inoculation, prompting governments and drugmakers to raise awareness to ensure their efforts to beat the coronavirus are not derailed by public distrust.

Health Secretary Alex Azar on Thursday denied the push for a vaccine was political, but did not say whether he believed it was possible to have a vaccine ready before Election Day.

He said he would take a coronavirus vaccine authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. "We're going to run a transparent process," he told MSNBC. "The best thing we can do for vaccine hesitancy is ensure that the data is out there."

Democrats in the House of Representatives on Thursday introduced legislation that would require the FDA to consult with a panel of experts to ensure a vaccine doesn't get rammed through too fast. The panel, the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, is made up of experts from academia, industry and government.

While a quick vaccine is essential, bill sponsor U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi said, "it is even more important that quality is not sacrificed for speed in testing and evaluating any such vaccine."

It's just laughable isn't it? It's like he dreams up a best case scenario every time and then blurts it out as if it were actually true. Sadly, millions get sucked in every time. Given no vaccine has been made that worked on any of the previous corona viruses, this is an awfully optimistic statement.

I always enjoy reading the drivel this fool comes out with as I like a good laugh from time to time. People who are unable to work out that he is continuously spouting lies about how he would like things to be, and how he thinks his supporters want it to be, rather than reality, must be completely blinkered.

Vote and get vaxxed for free at the same time..

I’d be delighted if it pans out but I doubt it it’s just more bs I’m afaraid just like his I’m going to announce my healthcare plan in 2 weeks he’s just pandering for votes imo

Even if- how would that help him?

Because the relatives of the 160.000 dead will suddenly have amnesia?

All those slipping under the poverty line, due to his complete lack of leadership and sensible policies?

All those PEACEFUL protesters, that were brutalized by his secret police?

And HAVING a vaccine doesn't mean having it AVAILABLE for everybody!

He is just full of ...it!

I'm confident there will be multiple effective vaccines probably by the first half of 2021.

But even so they are far from panaceas.

They will likely need multiple doses.

Any normal safety issues are going to be rushed at least to some degree and in some countries a reckless degree.

The protection from such vaccines won't be nearly 100 percent. 50 percent if we're lucky.

Also due to the rush we won't know how long any vaccines will be effective for the people that it does work for.

Vaccine nationalism is rampant. The US which if it had a non toxic president would be the main leader opposing that but now by leaving the WHO is a strong force stoking that.

Solutions need to be global for any hope to a return to some kind of normal.

Of course 45  cares only about how any positive vaccine news can help him get reelected. It's always about his own selfish interests.

Unethical for him to make such promising prediction without the scientists just to bolster his damaged election chances and for Wall Street. He is creating confusion in the people's mind and lead to careless behavior that undermine the scientist's efforts to control the virus.

He will just deny he ever said it. Show his the film proof and he will say it's fake news or say he 'misspoke'.

Im amazed that his supporters like mamanoodle and topdeadcenter are not here to defend him like Don Quixote. Maybe because they could be tricked into having to take a bet about a vaccine in november. These are things he can be pinned down onto and highly unlikely.

What him worry?

Ethics are an alien concept to him.

As are laws as they might apply to him. He's been above the law all his life and he doesn't intend for that to ever change.

"But I'm doing it..."  Doing what, other than making out that any vaccine released will be due to him "doing" something?

he also said the virus will just magically disappear in April, he just didn't specify the year so i guess he's technically correct on both predictions,

Yup, there is a vaccine and it’s will be administered on November 3.

Hopefully the efficacy is 100%.

And there are no side-effects.

The situation is  so desperate, that even a vaccine that works on only 50% of the population  is viable. At least part of society would continue.  I would take the vaccine, but I wouldn't take anything from China or Russia  provided to the west.  Whatever happens, large parts of the world will be off limits for travel until the vaccine is rolled out. That means no African trips, no trips to much of latin America, the middle east and SE Asia.  it would be Australia, New Zealand, Canada, North Asia and EU bubble with the UK and  USA joining once they had their populations  vaccinated.

We could probably go with the current  Oxford vaccine, if the situation becomes dire and society as we know it is on the verge of collapse. Unfortunately, there are not enough  doses to even make a dent. It will take 2-3 years to get vaccine manufactured and administered around the world.  And before we get there, the syringes and  alcohol wipes. and drug vials and packaging has to be manufactured. Some countries have started now, It will take 2 -3 years to get that product out.

First time I have seen the  donkey  offering the  carrot !

Russia are claiming that they will have vaccine available by October - Putin to the rescue.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-53621708

Maybe Putin will allow Trump to buy up their stock of vaccine for a 'small' fee in October and then Trump can announce 'mission accomplished' just in time for the election. Unlikely that Trump or anyone in his family, GOP members or anyone with any sense would be lining up to have a shot. Shades of Concordski
