Top Ten Car Producers In The World: 1950 - 2020

If you've not seen this previously, it is quite stunning, and not just the changes in world car manufacturing leadership (which are plenty sobering) but also the always-moving digital graphic technique. (You can't take your eyes off it!) Note particularly what has happened to the UK, Russia, and other European countries, and also especially note what has happened to China. It was not even on the Top 10 list for the first 50-60 years of this chart, but watch what happens, and how FAST it happens, once China decides to get into the automobile business! (A famous and obviously prescient economist once said, "If the Chinese government, or its Communist Party, or the People's Red Army (and remember, they are all basically the same thing) ever decides to get into YOUR business, you best beware because they ONLY play to WIN, and they almost NEVER lose.")

Thailand was up and coming until the coup. Now heading towards Feudalism.

I want to see a video like this for black pudding consumption . Something we can proudly lead the world in. And it must be English black pudding. No foreign imitation.

That Thailand never made it into the top 10 shows how insignificant the industry is on a global scale.

If you look again you will see that at 5.10 minutes into the video Thailand had briefly reached 9th position.

Then came the junta engineered coup , goodbye investor confidence and Thailand dropped out.

Nice job Mr Prayuth .

As a Chinese to date I'm not fond of Chinese car industry. China has very heavy tax like Thailand, also has Japanese-style most strict car regulation in the world. Even with billions market and robust industry and purchase of Volvo etc. still yet to make a single mass-produced car that is both fun and elegant. All boring daily commuters or working vehicle.

In China owning a car is super PITA. Even apply driver license could cost somewhere from 7000-14000CNY ~ 700-1400USD and bloody difficult. Plus super strict emission regulation could outlaw 2-3yrs new car or at least prohibits them from entering metro area. Plus traffic police is BRUTAL( a situation in Thailand could haggle to 100baht fine, in China may go straight to jail ). I can't see they build any fun cars with so many chains bounding innovation

Proton was the last Cheap Charlies Dream to get dumped here. They were like a Rolls compared to MG Beer Cans. Nowt beats a nice little Toyo/Honda for value, or a Suzuki. Their Volvos are worth nothing wordwide after 5 mins.

Example Toyota Hilux built in Thailand is built with 90%  components made in Thailand

Currently EV's built in Thailand are built with 30% components made in Thailand

The domestic value added (domestic value add) that Thailand will receive from the production of 1 EV car is much lower than the production of ICE cars due to having to rely on importing key parts from abroad. Meanwhile, in the original product group that Thailand can produce, it is likely that prices will have to be reduced in order to compete with Chinese entrepreneurs. Because Chinese companies can import directly from China at a much lower cost than Thailand. As a result, even if an EV car factory is established in Thailand, the benefits that Thailand will receive from car production will be less than in the past.

So all car production in Thailand is not equal and ICE vehicles have a higher value and generate more jobs  to the Thai economy than an EV
