Replacement medal?

Recommended Posts

Here is an odd question.  With all my moving around, I lost my Afghanistan Civilian Service Medal.  I have emailed the FCO, DFID and the UK Embassy in BKK .... just auto replies and no real responses.  Any idea how I can get a replacement medal?

Best,  KTM

The Operational Service Medal (OSM) Afghanistan is awarded to personnel who complete operational service on or in support of, operations in Afghanistan from 11 September 2001.

You’ll automatically receive the medal if you’re currently serving and have deployed on a current operation, you don’t need to apply. If you have not received your medal and think you might be entitled, speak to your Unit HR.

To apply for the Operational Service Medal - Afghanistan, you must have:

  • served under the command of the UK Joint Task Force Commander
  • 30 days continuous service or 45 days aggregated service
  • served in either Zone 1 or Zone 2 (service in Zone 1 will be recognised with a clasp to the OSM)

Thanks @evadgib, but not really.   It's the Civilian Service Medal awarded by the FCO and I was already awarded it.  I just need a replacement for it - it was lost in a move.  And the email address for the FCO just returns an unhelpful auto reply with no way to get real assistance.  And the UK Embassy is just as bad.

I suppose I could ask my former employer to contact the FCO since they submitted my paperwork originally, but I assumed it would be easier  to talk directly to the FCO or UK Embassy here.

I would suggest getting in touch with your original HR dept that submitted the original paperwork.

The Embassy here would have no knowledge of anything to do with your service in Afghanistan.

That would be the British Embassy in Kabul. Have you tried contacting them ?

Best of luck.

Yeah I am guessing that is what I need to do.  No, I didn't contact the BEK (Kabul) since I assume any UK embassy could assist with a request to the FCO.  The embassy in Kabul wouldn't have a record either, since the paperwork went to the FCO in London.  (I just expected more than  a silly auto reply from the  FCO  hence  trying to talk to an embassy.)

No worries.  Appreciate the help.

I would at this point if I saw one.  But, they are actually engraved along the rim of the medal with the awardee's name.

Take it to a jeweller, they will do the engraving.

OK this is for Mil personal. But, I imagine that the medal would have come from here. May be worth contacting, they could provide you with the info you need to possible get a replacement. I realise your NOT deceased - but the contact details may be useful)… Best of luck

There are companies that specialize in replacing medals, inc engraving, at a (fairly) reasonable price.

Here are some examples:

https://www.messdress.com/shop/medals/replacement-medals.html

https://bigburymint.com/

Would appreciate any help.  After 7 years in Kabul, this medal is actually important to me.  (My fault it got lost in a move though I know.)

were you able to at least Download the Application Form?

 CSMA Application Form

never trust phones to get through...

http://[email protected]

when you have the Appln Form

- Note what is down near the bottom:  (you'll need a UK address)

[quote:]

"We send all medals to successful applicants via Royal Mail recorded delivery to the delivery address that you have provided. We are unable to send medals to any overseas residential addresses."

... can see why you need to directly contact the Office though... As since you had already been Issued the Medal; they can only now Issue a Duplicate.

If you are eventually successful, you can expect the engraving to have  something like a (D) added to the inscription, which denotes a Duplicate has been Issued.

Yes.  Thanks.  Ill give it a shot.  Don't mind the (D) being added.
