The DLT plan to contact the health authorities to determine what diseases should be on the list of those that make it dangerous to operate a motor vehicle

Weird that they scapegoat those with congenital disease, but the much bigger problem is drink, no helmet, no licence, speeding, how about law enforcement?

  • What about preventing the many children and people without a licence from driving motorcycles.

and driving under the influence of drugs!!!

Another flash in the pan law. will be brushed under the carpet in weeks . i have driven bikes cars trucks on Thai roads for 20 years and never been asked to show licence once If they want to lower the deaths on the roads then ban alcohol, but that is a big no no, .

There is a strong possibility that the DLT will contract with big bike distributors to do the training and provide certification. Honda, for example, has this training already on offer.  Well organized, well-regarded even though primarily a PR effort up to now.

Well what is it going to cost this time? I bet the testing circuit will be for Honda dreams

not for big bikes which have a much larger turning radius. It may be the first time in 45 years of

riding big bikes I might fail. But for a extra 1000 baht you passed.

I'm with them on this regards people with diseases.

There is a old Canadian bloke called Bryan who's former girlfriend is Jezebel June and he has Parkinson's disease and still rides his motorbike around Ban Chang when he's there.

Bet he's  good  o the twisty stuff though!

riders of these will have to undergo special training

Really? And who do you know of at DoT who would know anything about bikes. Congenital Disease . Blind is the only one that comes to mind.
Sky news has a film on theThailand roads today.  Most “Big Bikers” are not the problem. The vast majority of accidents involve Honda dream sized bikes, no licence, 3 on a bike, drunk and no road sence. This is more of a wanting to do something rather actually doing something.

An I.Q Test would be better.

Good idea. But then again, how you want to make an IQ test if there is no brain.

This is a typical Thai approach of ‘recognising there is an issue’ and doing everything else but the right thing to mitigate the severity of the issue.

It’s been said a million times on this forum alone - Effective policing will have the greatest impact reducing road traffic incidents.

Unfortunately, ineffective policing is cemented firmly in Thai culture.

The latest plan is to prohibit anyone with a congenital disease (roke prajam tua) from driving.

The really underlying problems - such as insufficient driver training, the failure to instill in drivers a sense of steering their vehicles safely and with foresight for themselves and others, the prevailing disregard for almost every traffic law, as well as appallingly lax vehicle maintenance - once again have NOT been addressed.

Yeah well how are they going to collect bribes if they enforce the law fairly and as written?  Come on man, get with the program!

For the first time the Department of Land Transport has acknowledged that most of the accidents on Thai roads are caused by people - the drivers and riders themselves.

3 of the main things that cause accidents, there are others of course but good luck in stopping the 3 main offenders.

1: Incompetence

2: Alcohol
3: Drugs

Start with (congenital) diseases like:
Stubborness
Lack of sense of responsibility
Addiction to speeding
Addiction to impress chicks
Handling of midlife crisis

In the land of reverse logic, what they really mean is:

We need to lower the spread of CD and STD's,so we wont give you a driving licence if you ďont stop your promiscuity...TIT.????????????

They should also ban people with the disease of alcoholism.

You mean BADGES saying 350 cc sales go up. If the badge on the side says 350, how will the cops know different?

Green book.

I just had to clarify ‘congenital’ - it’s a disorder or defect since birth .. Hmmmmm

How about driving education, testing and enforcement.

well lets hope with diseases they mean alcoholisme and drugusisme that would be taking down some roadkills

learning them how to drive in a real driving school would be another clever move

thai driver licenses will always be a joke anyway

True

it's a shame that almost in all the schools in Thailand

you can see at the start\closing time kids around 10 years old

3 or 4 of them without helmet on the same motorbike.

I don't know who is the most at fault here, the parents, the teachers, the police?

If the kids don't start to learn at school what is wrong or right and why, they will

never know nor change their behaviour

And the mentally unstable. Plenty of those around who like to drive into other vehicles or even pedestrians because they've had a bad day/argued with someone/been cheated in business.

But the restrictions they talk about introducing in 120 days have been around in the real world for decades. Why has it taken Thailand so long to wake up and smell the carnage?

because they are slow? when a thai wishes another thai goodluck he says i wish you a slow life, does this not explain everything?

Brilliant idea, lets introduce a different licence for motorcycles above 400cc, that will dramatically decrease the road deaths, 555.

ALL the motorcycle accidents/deaths in our locality are on scooters, ridden by kids or intoxicated Lao Khao pilots who do not have a clue what a driving license looks like let alone possessing one.

Add to that the majority don't even possess a car driving license, just a couple of hundred baht in the cup holder for the tea kitty in case they get pulled over.

That is too sensible for the soldiers to even think about.

They will do well to start with those who drive/ride without licenses at all or suspend or disqualified ones before they worry about engine sizes...

Another post which is too sensible for military "educated" soldiers who think they can run a country.

Although the dictionary translates it as "congenital disease", when Thai doctors ask whether you have "roke prajam tua", they're actually referring to "chronic conditions" - heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or anything else that you're stuck with for the rest of your life.

What a waste of time and effort.
