1000 .jpgs Lost.. Was Trying To Trying To Batch Rename Files & Poof

the short question: suggest a freeware software to restore 'disappeared' .jpgs

folders are intact, no files visible.

long story:

this morning I was trying to rename over 1000 jpgs that had been saved without an extension.

example: file1 ... to file1.jpg

long term file name-ing issues came to a head this morning.

using a program called power desk I attempted to add the .jpg extension to a huge folder of .jpg files .. 1000 .jpg files that had been saved without the .jpg extension.

power desk will allow you to rename files without an extension ..

so camera file "1000654.jpg" was renamed "file1" & camera file "100655.jpg" became "file2"

all of my camera files were renamed without .jpg.

when i tried to batch rename 1000 files to the same filename but NOW with the .jpg extension power desk balked.

i wanted to use the same file name, just add the extension

so file1 would become file1.jpg

well power desk did not like this, & was forcing me to click an "ok button" .. 1000 times..

that it could not rename file1 to file1.jpg. "OK" ..

& .. could not rename file2 to file2.jpg, "OK"

& so on

could not close the app without clicking "ok" 1000 times

so i gave power desk the 3 finger salaute .. <ctr><alt><delete>

now all of those .jpgs are 'gone'

.. even the files in sub folders that I was not attempting to rename .. YET!

total of about 1200 files .. all of my saved camera files ..

disappeared.

Go to download.com and search for recovery program. You can then filter for free programs. My quick search there came up with 27 free recovery programs.

Good luck recovering your files. I've had good success with EasyRecovery.Pro in the past.

Don't know where you are but I have Easy Recovery Pro on USB, I keep it for emergencies. I am in Jomtien. If you are local you could borrow it. Remember though. When running a recovery programme you cannot recover to the same partition the originals were on. So if you have only 1 disk/partition then you will need a big external drive to recover all your photos to.

easy recovery looks to be the top of the line.

i went to download & downloaded 'pc inspector' .. downloads top rated recovery..

some PC I messages were scary .. once I had several million minutes to go!

i think becasue I immediately went into the recovery mode & avoided as much HD writing as possible..

it seemed to run out of memory .. 0ne file had 800 3 meg .jpg files = 2.5 gig & it was moving to another folder on a exterior usb drive .. i'm sure that slowed it down considerably.

got an out of memory message & had to run it again rebooted turned virus off & spy off & HP off

it seemed to be more efficient.

I record off Sirrus Radio to a .wav recorder .. sometime :D I forget :D & the files are well over a gig.. those big .wav files (bigger than my ram, size matters) take forever to rip to .mp3 ..

oh, & it added a .jpg extension to all the misnamed files .. was a long way to get where I was going .. but im ere. :o

some old directors I'd forgotten about showed up .. the hard drive is 4 years old.

pictures from an old camera came up & a deleted James Taylor mp3 album from somewhere.

most of my computer problems are I/O related

:D:bah: idiot operator. :bah::D

you have windows executable / program on a USB? Amazing the portable technology!

Professional?

the small 'flash' ram is quite wonderful .. my camera will take 1000s of pictures within a few battery changes .. so ###### many files .. I can go through 4xAAs in 2 hours easy ot the elephant farm / crocodile / water fall tour day.. I've taken 200 pics in 30 minutes on Khao Son Road

& now I'm backing up my music / concert tapes & DVDs to mpeg4

+ mp3s .. I've got a HD music collection that would collapse a Buri Ram hooch if on 33s

saw an ad in the US for a 320 gig USB for $79. (after freekin rebate) .. no reason not to have a secure copy of everything away form the computer / unplugged in / in it foam board packin' .. restin' & waitin'

anyway .. amazing you carry recovery software around with you!

curious, what else is on that device? .. I'm picturing a key fob like device..??

my neighbor is a IT tech of some sort .. does field service calls & he carries a USB device w/ the drivers he thinks he will need .. he might also have software like you

what about the windows registry changes needed for apps?

Next time..

Dos :: RENAME *. *.JPG

IMPORTANT It's typed correctly but doesn't show up well. The command is "RENAME *.<SPACE>*.jpg" :o

EDIT <SPACE> means press the space-bar (the long thing at the bottom of the keyboard) :D

Once you get it all completed , best to back it up on a dvd or cds. I have 40= gigs of music & 22 gigs of pics

& lost 12 gigs of music . It was a hard lesson to learn but now I burn DVD's every 2-3 months so I never get bit again. I renamed all my music in the folder the same name .What a pain in th *ss .

I will never be fooled & schooled twice!

When I lost a load of Smarstsound files once (Thousands of pounds worth!) I purchased Easy Recovery Pro. It did the job fine. Presented me with a list of items it found and I selected the ones I wanted to recover.

As i have a computer both at home and in my office I decided for safety reasons to backup the programme File folder containing Easy Recovery onto my trusty 2GB USB stick. I carry around lots of usefull stuff on it that I may need either on my computers here in Thailand or while I am in the UK.

I have found that there is no problem running Easy Recovery straight from the USB stick. It must need no registry entry and all the required DLL's must either be standard in Windows XP or they are in the Easy Recovery folder. Works on all computers I have tried it on so far.

Not connected with the company at all but would like to recomend it as a great recovery tool.
