Thailand’s long-running “cockle wars” may be nearing an end after shellfish farmers began dismantling their wooden platforms in Surat Thani’s Bandon Bay on Wednesday (September 2).

The move was ordered by the Maritime Enforcement Command Centre 2 after months of clashes between the farmers and local fishermen over the right to harvest cockles (hoi kraeng).

In June, the Navy sent boats to monitor the area over fears that tension between the two sides could lead to serious violence.

However, farmers hit back at the encroachment charge today, filing evidence in their defence at the command centre office. The farmers say they have invested millions of baht in their sea farms and will not give up without a fight.

This is the second day that the command centre has overseen the operation to remove their wooden structures.

That may very well be so, BUT they did not have permission.  Their farms are illegal It's like building a castle on someone elses land and then complaining when turfed off

So what , they are Encroaching  Surat Thani’s Bandon Bay.

They can Say , Argue whatever they want .Whatever is Wrong Stays Wrong .

They having been getting away with this Encroaching for so long ,Now they think they Own the Bay.

Same as the Boat Fisherman they have been getting away with Illegal fishing ,Now they think that the Government should give them Compensation because they say,

that they can't catch Enough fish doing it the Legal way.

unfortunately there are those that think because they have been able to do it illegally for years they have the right to continue doing it especially when money is involved. If they do not lease the area they use for their farms from the correct govt body or follow the govt regulations they they need to remove the structures and cease doing it unless they are able to get  a lease agreement. Its good to see the govt cracking down on the ones doing things illegally, can only improve aquatic agriculture
