WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump will tell the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday it "must hold China accountable for their actions" related to the coronavirus pandemic.

"The Chinese government, and the World Health Organization – which is virtually controlled by China – falsely declared that there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission," Trump will say, according to excerpts released ahead of delivery.

"Later, they falsely said people without symptoms would not spread the disease ... The United Nations must hold China accountable for their actions," he will say.

Trump taped his speech on Monday at the White House for delivery remotely to the General Assembly, which convened virtually this week.

The president promised to distribute a vaccine and said: "We will defeat the virus, we will defeat the virus, and we will end the pandemic" and enter a new era of prosperity, cooperation and peace.

Trump, a frequent critic of the United Nations, also said in the excerpts that if the UN is to be effective, it must focus on "the real problems of the world" like "terrorism, the oppression of women, forced labor, drug trafficking, human and sex trafficking, religious persecution, and the ethnic cleansing of religious minorities."

  • Pretty much motherhood statement that anyone can read out. His blame game is distasteful and should self-reflect on his failure to protect his own citizens.

  • Luckily, regardless of how anyone here feels about Trump, we are all at least fair-minded enough to agree that this is a good speech, saying things that badly need to be said.

  • This man has huge cojones to talk like this, and someone should put them Chinese in their place...

Political speech appropriate but sooooo trite and disingenuous !

The virus came from Wuhan and the CCP tried to cover it up. This is a fact.

Just Donald trying to distract from the fact that due to his incompetence 200,000 Americans are dead

Both Trump's narratives are not facts. Just his cover to defend himself from the failures to protect his own people. He still don't have a plan to protect his own people and that's a fact.

Let's see now, this speech from trump focusing on the things he deems important contain aspects which should make all people cringe.........

Let's take the oppression of women, and refer to some of his comments about "grabbing women by the p*ssy", that he can do what he likes with them, and also the fact that he has used hookers in the past (and paid them to keep quiet).

Also his racist remarks in the past don't really put him in a good light with regards to his speech or various other aspects of it either.

Forced labour he says, forgetting that he hired illegal immigrants to build some of his projects, and paid them way below the going rate, because he could – – not exactly forced labour but along a similar line.

The sooner this man is removed from office, one way or another, the better for all mankind.

Okay, I guess I was wrong. Not everyone is fair-minded enough.

That speech to the UN by Xi was scary. It was almost like a prelude to them planning to take over the world under their commie program. Xi and China are a bunch of f n liars that need to be slapped hard.

As I am usually the first to criticise Mr. Trump, right must be right! This is a good speech, and he have a lot of true juice in what he is saying and presenting. For once, well done Mr. Trump. Doesn´t mean will will be buddies now, but when you show this side you are possible to be tolerated.

We agree agree with it all the more that it's what the U.N. is already doing.

They were things that have been said and do bear repeating. But not by someone who repeatedly minimized the threat. Trump is definitely the wrong man for that job.

You can criticize them for it. You can criticize them 'til the cows come home. And after you've criticized them, you can go and visit the country without fear of being arrested or disappeared.

Try doing that with China or Hong Kong.

Cannot be ignored. The Chinese Communist government has some serious malfeasance to own up to.

Which still doesn't make it right, very poor argument

So.....let's rename the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic the USA virus, because that's where it probably came from.

Besides, wouldn't it be better for Trump to start telling the truth to his own people before apportioning blame?

This would have been all well and good if it wasn't for the fact he Tweeted out in January 25th 2020 -

They are dead thanks to the Chinese

Originally malfeasance on both sides, but at least with the Chinese it is not ongoing with Covid as with trump. For trump to demand the UN hold China 'accountable' only demonstrates trump hasn't a clue how the UN operates, nor does he have any credibility due to pulling out of and defunding a number of UN institutions. Hopefully the lessons of an unilateralist and isolationist administration will be learnt.

You do not speak for "we". You do not get to decide what and who's "fair-minded". There is no such general agreement, or even close to it, as you try to convey.

China is on security council and has veto power, same as USA

I'd say his speech is intended for domestic consumption.

He should know there is no way the UN can do anything to punish China

What are you on about? Talking tough when things are already bad between the two countries? It would have been brave if Trump could have suffered any meaningful consequences saying them - but he does not.

I'm aware that you're doing your best to defend the PRC, but seriously - that Trump does and says things to deflect from his own failures, doesn't absolve the PRC from it's own. It's not a zero-sum game.

Scary how? How was it a prelude for anything? And unless you missed it, it's been a while since their system had a whole lot to do with textbook Communism. Can refer to their ambitions (which I agree are wearisome) without the outdated political jargon.
