Thai Beaches Won’t Reopen Fully Until Vaccines Become Available

By Randy Thanthong-Knight

>> Tourism council expects 50,000 visitors in fourth quarter

>> More tourist businesses to shut without foreign visitors

Thailand, which is set to welcome the first batch of foreign tourists in six months, is unlikely to fully throw open its popular beaches and national parks to overseas visitors until a vaccine against the coronavirus is widely available.

Authorities will probably allow the entry of only a limited number of foreign visitors for a few months before considering further easing of curbs, Chairat Trirattanajarasporn, president of the Tourism Council of Thailand, told reporters in Bangkok Wednesday. The council, which represents local tourism operators, doesn’t expect full reopening of the borders until vaccines become accessible, he said.

About 150 Chinese nationals will arrive at Phuket on Oct. 8, the first set of foreign tourists to visit Thailand after the pandemic forced the tourism-reliant nation to close its international borders in March. The plan could provide a model for how other tourist-reliant economies around the world -- from New Zealand to Greece -- could reopen more safely to international travelers.

With all due respect I think at this juncture it would be prudent to protect the elderly and allow the rest of society to start opening up.

The same goes for the eight Chinese arriving by private charter.

One rule for their Chinese overlords another for dirty farangs.

It's going to get busy on 8 October. Expect major delays navigating pavements while they're here.

Vaccine won't be widely available in Thailand until 2022 at the earliest. So good luck with that plan

By the time a vaccine is available what will the death tolls be? I just read that currently in the US 977 people are dying per day. That's 0.000003053% of the population, and majority are over 70. Concerns for rising figures in the winter are warranted but seriously, we're shutting the globe down for this?

Quarantine for the millionaires will no doubt be in high end luxury villas with a steady stream appointments being set up with real estate agents to snap up all the land and property that is going for a fraction of the price. This is sickening and all being allowed by corrupt officials.

Given that it's 1,200 per month - 3,600, where are the rest coming from?

...and under the current STV, I doubt 3,600 will bother.

For those of us over 70, yes, shutting down the globe is OK.  We have rights also.

Those daily number of deaths are expected to rise dramatically very soon.

Easy answer.  Wear masks, social distance, abide by the directives from the medical experts.

Do they really expect low pay low status guards, er security, at quarantine hotels to boss around Chinese millionaires? That they wouldn't do as told by the rich given some cash incentives?

Another misleading headline, the only thing preventing the beach run establishments opening is purely the lack of tourists, I do believe all beaches are open .....................LOL

If you want to cower in your room alone, I'm OK with that.

But that's no reason for you to want to force everyone else to do it.

Yep, but to be fair, Thailand is already bought and paid for by the Chinese so its only fair they can be allowed to visit their latest province.

That is so poriticarry incollect ....

There will be a long gaptime between when a Virus Vaccine is approved, when it is made available, and when the masses of people are inoculated.  I am guessing a year and a half after an approved vaccine goes into production to when a sufficient total of a population gets their shot.  A reasonable guess is the vaccine will be effective on 60% of those vaccinated.

I thought they were open already?

But having said that does this now mean that any tourists coming into Thailand after quarantine are told" so sorry you cannot go to the beaches" ?

Please provide a cost benefit analysis of your plan. Everyone is for the elimination of restrictions. However, before we can do that we should know what the costs are. Surely you can  give is a cost.
