(Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that he and first lady Melania Trump had tested positive for COVID-19 and would immediately quarantine and begin the "recovery process."

"We will get through this," Trump tweeted.

Trump's positive test follows news that Hope Hicks, a top adviser and trusted aide, had tested positive for the new coronavirus.

Hicks travels regularly with the president on Air Force One and, along with other senior aides, accompanied him to Ohio for the presidential debate on Tuesday and to Minnesota for a campaign event on Wednesday.

Trump, who is tested regularly for the virus that causes COVID-19, has kept up a rigorous travel schedule across the country in recent weeks, holding rallies with thousands of people in the run-up to the Nov. 3 election, despite warnings from public health professionals against having events with large crowds.

Trump has come under sharp criticism for his response to the coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 200,000 people in the United States alone. The president has touted his management of the crisis.

if you believe in Karma, trump will have a massive deficit on his ledger; trump is the epitome of insensitivity to peoples suffering. Personally, for the good of US stability, I wish trump quickly recovers.

Hopefully trump can use this as an excuse to drop out. He clearly sees how badly he's doing in the polls and if it's one thing he's good at it's running away, bone spurs be damned!

Opportune time for those unhappy GOPs to consider the 25th amendment.

Maybe. But he also knows that without the protection of being in the WH, it will be open season on the many legal issues he will be facing.

Between the devil and the deep blue sea..........

Well, given trumps previous remarks and actions regarding the virus,it would seem karma is indeed something to fear.

Agreed,an "antifa" trick!Let's face it the man's a couple of nickels short of a dollar as is Bolsonaro and the miserably tonsured one PM of the former British empire (in their respective currencies..) and all three have provided uniquely incompetent leadership for their countries-and have caught the virus...quite bizarre.

Loons...

Likely that many WH staffers will also be affected. Hang onto your masks, think we will be in for a wild ride and it won't be pretty.

There is no way in hell he didn't know beforehand that there was a problem. Hope Hicks was sick last nite on the plane. She would have been tested then. If I was at the fundraiser I would be fit to be tied.
