I always give the tip directly to the person providing the service.

I usually find the cleaner on my first day and tip them then and ask to have my room cleaned first when I go for breakfast.

99% success rate.

Same as me I put a tip into an envelope addressed to the "cleaning staff", then put the envelope under a towel which I leave in the bathroom on the edge of the bath/shower/sink where they will find it.

I generally ask for extra towels, water and bedding a tip them when they bring it. If i think the service is good I also leave a tip when I leave, usually directly to the staff as they are usually around when I check out.

It may be an "American" thing, but I only tip for good service, I don't tip for poor service.

I think under pillow is too obvious and easily checked by the check-out room checker.

I also usually tip at the start of my stay which insures I get what I want; extra towels, bed made the way I like it, ect.

Best place to hide a tip is under a used towel in the bathroom.

Dry your ### with the towel and then wrap the tip in it, nice.

So Mrs HP, says it OK to leave the tip when you check out, or leaves it when out of the room?

Yes, she’s never had a problem leaving money on the nightstand or next to the kettle when we leave.

She also strips the bed linen and places them with the used towels  for easy collection, but that’s just her.
