DDC watching closely after saliva test of some travellers from Thailand Covid-19 positive at Japanese airport

Opas Karnkawinpong, acting director-general of the DDC

A few travellers from Thailand are testing positive on arrival at Japanese airports, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) said.

Opas Karnkawinpong, acting director-general of the DDC, said on Thursday that in the past weeks travellers from Thailand to Japan were found infected with Covid-19 after a new method of testing started from August 1 at airports in Japan. The preliminary screening method called CLEIA (Chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay) detects infection from the traveller's saliva samples. This is a test that the World Health Organisation does not recommend as a standard, Opas said.

After receiving a report, the DDC has coordinated with the IHR national focal point of Japan to investigate the disease and check out more details about all such cases.

From coordination and preliminary investigation, from August 1 to October 8, there were 15 positive results on people travelling from Thailand after the saliva test. They were divided into 2 groups.

Group 1 had eight cases, detected from August 1 to September 21. They included two Japanese men, seven Thai men and one Thai woman. They were later taken to hospitals for testing with the RT-PCR method to look for the genetic material of the Sars-Cov-2 virus. The laboratory results of all eight cases were negative. Also, no Covid-19 was detected in 49 close contacts of these eight people in Thailand, the CDC said.

There are seven cases in Group 2, detected from September 30 to October 8. Two Japanese girls two years old, and nine months old, leaving Thailand with their mother and brother on September 30 tested positive. They were sent to a state quarantine facility. The saliva test results of the mother and brother were negative.

In the other cases of three Thai women, a Thai man and a Japanese male RT-PCR test results are awaited.

What do you suggest, use the commonly used "dubious" at best PCR tests that have a 88% chance off a false negative, that should help further the agenda

"Covid cases" doesn't mean "people ill with Covid",

Its just a means of furthering the "controla" virus agenda ????

The Japanese want to know why we are letting in these DIRTY Thai foreigners into the country when they are not testing in their country for CV19, Thai only test arrivals not people inside the country, then accuse all other countries of having high rates of infection. (NO TEST, NO HAVE) ???? LOS!!!

How can you believe those Japanese, they eat raw fish!

Now you wonder why Thailand has slowed the arrivals of the Chinese.  Once they had returned back to China and then were tested and found to have Covid the whole house of cards will have fallen down and there will be no way to save FACE here in Thailand.  So they will continue to spin more stories, and deny and deny, and say that the Japanese tests are false.  What happens when they trace the trail of the positive person found in Japan, and locate and test all contacts here in Thailand and say they are negative like all the other track and trace results have done.  I am talking about the Egyptian military, the diplomats daughter, the DJ, and the soccer player.  People remember these things. If it is what I believe it is, then the asymptomatic cases, and those with now what they think are seasonal colds or allergies really have Covid, but are not tested properly with a test that works, then Thailand is setting itself up for a world of hurt, chaos, and internal economic collapse.  Hell, what do I know, they cry wolf and the sky is falling too much for me to believe anything different then what I have written.  Oh yes, very sarcastic today.

It's like "Visa" and "Permission to stay". Using the wrong terminology muddles it up.

SARS-CoV-2 is the virus. The PCR test reagents react to a part of RNA of this virus.

COVID-19 is the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. Not all infections lead to COVID-19.

A verified case of COVID-19 should be a combo of medical analysis and PCR results.

SHOULD being the operative word! my understanding is that is not the case?

Depends. Each country seems to have their own version of how they define a case. Many of them now have casedemics on their hands, despite very few ending up in a hospital. Devil is in the details.

Based on what I've read the saliva tests alone are prone to several percent of false positives, a much higher false positive rate than the PCR tests.

From memory I believe this figure was quoted as being '2 to 4%', nothing specific.

They should be used alongside another type of test to confirm the result. This is based on the rapid saliva test they tested at Heathrow airport months back, I believe it's very similar if not the same.

Which was my point, they have cases, based on dubious testing that they state are "Covid 19" not cases or possible "cases. Their is a huge difference in perception, which "they" are perfectly aware off!

That's why they keep foreigners out, to hide the truth.

Yet again more evidence that the incompetents in Thailand have no idea how much covid is circulating. The only cases we hear about are people arriving from Thailand in other countries where the testing is more competent.

I still expect many silly Farangs to proclaim Thailand covid free. ????

It does help to read the article, although you are not the only one jumping on the confirmation bias bandwagon.

For those with a low attention span :

- 15 people tested positive with a new test, not recommended by WHO.

Everyone was retested using the RT-PCR method:

- 10 negative (plus nothing detected in 49 close contacts)

- 5 awaiting results.

I’m afraid there is no Thai CoVID smoking gun, as yet,  based on this report.

In the age of social media and everybody with a mobile phone is a reporter, if there were Covid cases in Thailand as many seem to imply, would't be the hospitals here overrun by now? And many dead? Could all of this be covered up? Give me a break!

The headline is deceptive at best. Seems the story centers around quick test is also a sloppy test, unreliable. That assumes the second test, although slower, is far more accurate. The subject is accuracy of tests, not levels of virus in Thailand.

First test is like using a mood ring to see if that girl you picked up in a bar is honest.

Second test more like hiring a private eye to investigate her in terms of honesty

Why would hospitals be over run by asymptomatic people or those with minor symptoms that resemble a cold or the flu at a low level.  Give it a rest will you. Many people do not go to a hospital or a clinic when they feel unwell.  Just look around you and you will see people coughing, sniffling etc....so time to get off the high horse.

So it's just the 'flu.

Yes, isn't it strange that so many are classified as PUI, and the number only increases.  However, maybe they are all of those tested prior to going into quarantine and were negative at first. Still, the number is to high for that to be true.  Maybe its everyone they have ever tested as a category, no thats not right either. Hmmmm.

Could be anything the government wants it to be other than Covid. There was an article by a government doctor the other day that told people not to downplay cold or virus symptoms and to think about Covid responsibly.

Of course if you test more you will get more cases. That's why we have the crazy situation in the UK and other countries in Europe now. The real question is why do you NEED to test people who are perfectly healthy and with no symptoms, using a test that it's inventor said should not be used to detect viruses which has a massive false-positive rate?

Even if there are cases in Thailand now which have gone untested, does it really matter? It's not like the health system is overwhelmed and people are dropping dead in the street, is it?

Even if you believe the official figures, covid only accounted for 2% of all deaths in the UK last week, 10 times less than the normal flu. Does this really justify destroying the livelihoods of millions and trashing the global economy?

I quite thinking about a test is a test. it looks like a test is very hit/miss. it would seem to me, all flights entering my country requires tests upon arrival. actually, test everyone before the flight.

"88% chance off [sic] a false negative"? Do you know what that even means? And if you happen to, do you really believe it or are you just pulling the first set of numbers that you get from your head (or other body part)? What is your source?

Are covid hospital admissions in Thailand rising at the same rate as they are in the west?

Simple yes or no, without the BS.
