The Royal Thai Police (RTP) is working with the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) to install an additional 5,000 CCTV cameras in areas prone to crimes in 50 districts of Bangkok, aiming to increase public security, said Pol Maj-General Yingyos Thepjamnong, RTP spokesman on Friday.

“The cameras would also help prevent crimes as well as provide concrete evidence to investigation officials in case of crimes,” he said.

“The Metropolitan Police Bureau will list the areas that need cameras and survey the actual locations for installation suitability before reporting to MEA who will carry out the installation.”

Deputy MEA governor and MEA spokesman Jaturong Suriyasasin added that apart from camera installation, the MEA would also support RTP with related infrastructure and services such as installing additional street lights in crime-prone areas and would be responsible for the maintenance of CCTV system.

“The Royal Thai Police would like to thank the Metropolitan Electricity Authority for their cooperation and support in the mission to increase public security and prevent crimes, which will ultimately boost our efficiency in law enforcement,” said the RTP spokesman.

But they will be under "maintenance" when required and only record 'anti-government' events.

They'll be asking bears to set their own traps next. The best way to reduce crime is a cut in police numbers.

Wonder who got the contract... did anyone tell authorities these cameras need to be connected to monitoring stations?

if installed correctly and maintained in WORKING order who will monitor these CCTV cameras. 5000 units will required new monitoring stations and a lot of staff to monitor 24 x 7. Me thinks it will be another pretend job once the units are purchased and the mandatory brown envelopes change hands they will probably sit in their boxes in storage.

They want to see what way the mob are coming next ????

I have no idea why the electric company would be responsible for maintaining CCTV cameras...and if they're really concerned about street lighting, how about turning on (or rendering workable) the thousands of non-functioning street lights all over the city that haven't shed any light in years?

Dontcha just feel safer already!

Not really, in most cases they will be used only for recording.

I suspect that will be controlled by a computer algorithm (virtual intelligence) and linked to various smart phone apps for enhancing tracking. Then will notify human monitors upon certain triggers. This’ll all work well, especially when the new 5G wireless rolls out. Welcome to the new normal...

Expect a big increase in crime, in coming years, against tourists.
