WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Top U.S. infectious diseases expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Sunday he had not agreed to be featured in an ad by President Donald Trump's re-election campaign and that his comments were taken out of context.

The ad, released last week, discusses Trump's effort to recover from the coronavirus personally, as well as his administration's work to address the pandemic. The 30-second spot uses older remarks from Fauci in a way that suggests he was praising the president.

"I can't imagine that anybody could be doing more," the ad shows Fauci saying.

But those remarks are from a March interview, where Fauci, who has been director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) since 1984, was discussing the broader effort, including by the White House coronavirus task force.

"In my nearly five decades of public service, I have never publicly endorsed any political candidate," Fauci said in a statement.

"The comments attributed to me without my permission in the GOP campaign ad were taken out of context from a broad statement I made months ago about the efforts of federal public health officials," his statement added.

Trump campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh defended the ad in a statement on Sunday, saying the words from Fauci "are accurate, and directly from Dr. Fauci’s mouth.

"As Dr. Fauci recently testified in the Senate, President Trump took the virus seriously from the beginning, acted quickly, and saved lives,” Murtaugh's statement added.

Fauci and Trump have not always agreed on how to handle the pandemic, which has infected nearly 7.7 million people in the United States and killed more than 214,000. Opinion polls show most voters disapprove of the president's handling of the crisis.

On Friday, Fauci described a Sept. 26 White House event, after which several attendees including Trump, tested positive for the virus, as a "superspreader event."

ABC News said on Sunday it had asked the White House to allow Fauci to appear on "The Week," but the administration refused to make him or other members of the task force available.

Alyssa Farah, the White House communications director, said later on Twitter that Fauci had made other media appearances earlier in the week, rebutting the charge he was "muzzled."

It's quite an amateur grab that was bound to get found out once you revisited the original interview ..

Devious desperation to use anything to hang onto power 5/10 ..

Execution of deviousness 2/10 ..

It's amazing that Trump and his goons will keep lying and lying about practically everything.  And why do they do that?  Because the truth is not on their side.  If they weren't lying their asses off, they'd have nothing.  Thankfully, most Americans can see this.  The entire GOP needs to burn to the ground and start over again.  This election will be a good starting point.

I only can agree- by 100%.

But there is only 1 problem:  the stupidity of a big number of Americans.

Every normal democracy has some right or left wing followers, but in general in low ranges (except England - i didn't say GB - and Brazil i.e.). But in LoS (the Land of Stupids) there are ~40% Trump voters. Therefore: USA = LoS.

Does the CEO of a company typically do all the work or does he designate competent people to work on it and monitor it and direct it? But, there’s a CEO take credit for the accomplishments of his employees?

If Fauci is talking about frequent meetings with the White House advisors, do his advisors summarize and advise the President?

President Trump does not have the expertise on medical knowledge to deal with the virus. It is his job to have people who are knowledgeable working on it and monitor status.
I don’t believe the CEO of a company that a develops great great products did all the work himself, nor that President Trump is responsible for all the work done on developing a vaccine.
I highly doubt people believe President Trump is actively in the lab working on the vaccine. But maybe those are the same people that think it is a serious comment about drinking bleach

Just waiting to see how the 45 supporters will spin THIS one.

Not exactly difficult is it. According to the video posted in post #13 the actual question he was answering was:

Have you ever seen this big of a coordinated response by an administration?

Hmmm....so why would Dr. Fauci have to come out and publicly announce that the Trump ad was inaccurate?  That the meaning in the ad was completely different than what he was conveying?  Don't worry, I doubt you can come up with a coherent answer.

Well it was not completely different was it, at most you could argue he was not talking about Trump as an individual but his administration as a whole.

Even the articacal states: he was discussing the broader effort, including by the White House coronavirus task force.

As to why Fauci has come out with a statement about it, you would need to ask him. I am guessing it has something to do with the upcoming election LOL

Fact:  The Trump ad suggested that Dr. Fauci was complementing Trump on his COVID response.

He was, the Trump administration at least.

6 minutes ago, Berkshire said:

Dr. Fauci had to come out and say this was absolutely false, he was complementing the federal effort led by the task force and other medical professionals.

He did not say it was absolutely fase, he said it was out of context, which it clearly was not.
