About one-fourth of respondents in a government survey in September travelled upcountry during weekends and holidays and the majority of travellers spent less than Bt5,000 on the trip.

“The survey was conducted in 884 districts in every province among 8,124 respondents,” Pimchanok Vonkorpon, director-general of the Commerce Ministry's Trade Policy and Strategy Office, revealed of the office’s survey on consumer behaviour.

“Out of 27 per cent who said that they had travelled upcountry from July-September, 56 per cent said the objective was sightseeing, while 44 per cent travelled to visit their families.”

"Of the respondents, 86.1 per cent said they spent less than Bt5,000 on the trip, 37.7 per cent said they spent Bt5,000 to Bt10,000, while only 13.9 per cent spent more than Bt10,000,” she added.

The survey also asked respondents about their travel plans for October; 47.7 per cent said they have no plan to travel upcountry, 40.6 per cent are still not sure, while only 11.7 per cent already have a plan.

“The top three issue that worry consumers in the current situation are: a second Covid-19 wave (40.1 per cent), increasing prices of consumer products (17.2 per cent) and increasing household debt (14.4 per cent),” added Pimchanok.

“From the survey results, there are indications that domestic tourism might not recover in the second half of the year, as people are still worried about the pandemic and economic recession,” she said. “Entrepreneurs in the tourism industry need to adjust their strategy to suit consumer behaviour in the new normal era, with focus on increasing protection against Covid-19 as well as keeping the price affordable and suitable to the consumer’s economic status.”

“The Ministry of Commerce has been conducting surveys on consumer behaviour as well as product and service prices periodically to make sure that there is no price gouging or product hoarding. If you witness or experience unfair pricing of products or services, please contact the ministry’s hotline at 1569,” she added.

I doubt it could get any worse.

The only way left is up.

No discounts for me, so I'm not going anywhere.

Just saying, if any Thai government officials would like to include me in the discounts, I've got quite a bit of cash to flash.

What I want and what I need are two entirely separate things.

I ain't paying more than anyone else.

Brits (and particularly thai bashing ones at that) pay more :cheesy:

It's not an uphill road. Without foreign tourists in vast quantities, there's simply NO road back to the kind of revenue they've gotten used to.

What domestic tourists spend pales in comparison and household debt is already sky-high, so there's no hope that they will be able to spend significantly more.

It stands to be argued that the real trouble for Thailand's tourist industry still lies ahead - with the upcoming "high season" that will be anything but.

Not much domestic tourism.

With the STV rules there is no international tourism.

The international longstayers get more and more problems to stay.

Seems that they do not want any tourism in the country.

Basically even the Chinese don't want to come back and partake in the expensive reception party organised for them, and Thais are too wise at being shafted.

Ohh what to do?

What I see is hotel (4 and 5 *) prices that have barely changed from the usual pre-pandemic prices.

I remember that, during the previous crisis, notably the turmoil around 2008-2010, hotels were really slashing down prices, and I was able to book rooms at around 2,500 baht in the best hotels in Bangkok, Samui and so on, plus big discounts on food and beverages.

Nothing close to that is offered nowadays.

So they keep their prices, and I keep my money...

You don't really need discounts at the moment. Hotels are so cheap. Am in a luxury hotel with pool, fitness centre, lovely room with balcony, buffet breakfast-450 b per night. I would not feel right paying less.
