I have an almost pathological fear of dentists due to a nasty incident in the dentists chair a long long time ago when I was a child.

At my last visit to a dentist in a local hospital my blood pressure hit over 200 & I ended up in the ER flat on my back being given BP meds.

I know that they are against knocking patients out and doing what they need to then waking them up when it's all over & my age and BP are also against me.

So my question is this, is there a drug I can get that will relax & chill me sufficiently to allow the dentist to do what is required & me to be a better patient, I haven't made the appointment yet and I'm already having nightmares and worrying hugely. Any positive help would be appreciated, thanks.

Diazapam if you can get hold of it....20mg sets me up nicely about 15 minutes in advance. Some people only need 5mg or 10mg but that has no effect on me

Thanks for that, I have a clinic that I have been using for 9 years, I'll go and chat with the Dr there.

I'll also wait & see if anyone else chips in ????

Any benzo (diazepam, alpramazol, bromazapam, midazolam  etc -  midazolam is short acting so especially favored for this purpose) but all have to be gotten at a hospital or clinic.

Do not plan on driving home if you take something.

If it proves impossible to get a benzo prescribed, the OTC drug hydroxyzine  has anti-anxiety effects at dosage of 50 - 100 mg (used as an antihistamine in much lower dosages)

Whichever you end up with I suggest a trial dose beforehand while at home just in case -- rarely people have unexpected and even paradoxical (opposite to expected) responses and you don't want to be in the dentist chair when you find that out.  So take a dose when at home one evening first.

Thanks Sheryl, that's good info & I'm very obliged to you, I won't be driving so no worries there, what sort of dosage would you be thinking of ? I will ask the Dr at my local clinic, he is very accommodating, and I'll certainly try a trial dose at home prior to booking an appointment, just as an aside, I had a knee replacement with a lumber puncture/ spinal tap, no worries & chatted with the operation room staff & Dr's, also recently had cataract removal & new lenses, again  o worries at all, Dentists however, ????????????????????????????
