Ban on sales and promotion of alcohol online starts December 7

From December 7 you’ll no longer, officially, be able to purchase alcohol online in Thailand, according to a posting in the Royal Gazette back in September, the Thai government will prohibit the sales and promotion of alcoholic drinks on every online platform from December 7.

 

The ban includes direct sales, promotion and introduction of alcoholic products online, but will not include electronic payments of purchases at retail stores, restaurants and bars.

 

Selling and buying beer, wine and spirits online has become more popular, but the Thai PM says that internet alcohol sales are harder to control than sales at local liquor stores. The announcement said that it’s difficult to check that the provisions of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act are being followed online, like no alcohol sales before 5pm or on certain holidays (although many local stores didn’t follow the rules anyway).

 

“The Royal Gazette had published the announcement of ‘Prohibition of the sale of alcoholic beverages via electronic sales nationwide’ on September 8 noting that alcohol has become more easily accessible online due to the popularity of social media platforms and specialist Apps.

 

“No person shall sell alcoholic beverages or provide services related to alcoholic beverages on electronic channels. Online payment for trading such beverages at actual stores are excluded.”

 

With Thai officials obsessed with the perceived evils of alcohol, Thailand already has a ban on the sale of alcohol before 11am, between 2 – 5pm, and after midnight. It’s also illegal to brew your own beer at home or to post pictures of branded alcohol online, either as a private citizen or as a company. But the government’s latest announcement, that drinkers won’t be able to purchase alcohol online that really ignited the Twittersphere and social media.

 

Deputy PM and the Minister of Public Health, Anutin Charnvirakul, told AP after a meeting of the alcohol control committee on November 7, that they’d agreed to draft guidelines, under the revision of the Public Health Ministry, to inform the Public regarding the Royal Gazette announcement of banning online alcohol trading.

 

“Violators of the new ban will be subject to up to six months in prison and/or a fine of up to 10,000 baht.”

 

People will still be able to use electronic methods of payment, like bank transfers, when buying alcohol at stores, restaurants or other establishments, just not purchase from online portals.

 

The Ministry is going to launch a publicity campaign about the new bans in the week leading up to December 7.

It would be easier to change the Draconian laws.

I am sure any ardent Buddhist would abstain on certain holidays anyway, and, as TV mentions, it is readily available at many stores anyway.

There is no amount of liquor, beer or wine that is safe for your overall health, according to a new global study.

The study, published in the Lancet on Friday, said alcohol was the leading risk factor for disease and premature death in men and women between the ages of 15 and 49 across the world in 2016, accounting for nearly one in 10 deaths. That same year, alcohol was associated with 2.8 million deaths.

The deaths included alcohol-related cancer, cardiovascular disease, infectious diseases, intentional injuries such as violence and self-harm, traffic collisions and unintentional injuries like drowning and fires.

Although previous studies have found that light-to-moderate drinking can reduce heart disease, the researchers said alcohol is still likely to do more harm and the safest level of drinking is none.

No problem. You sell soda water under the same name as your beer or wine, and advertise that. Big Logo, and written in small letters, 'mineral water'. Thats how the big boys get away with it.

Can't buy, can buy, can't but, can buy - this is Thailand - can always buy somewhere.

The same was said about beef steak a few years ago!

This new law probably has as much to do with protecting the business of these two giants than protecting the populace from the evils of alcohol.

If you are ordering wine online what difference does the time matter if it is being delivered a day later. Or would that mean that you could not take delivery before 5 p.m.

Nearly every Mom and Pop shop sells drink at any time of the day, or on any day, regardless of the law.

This comes at a time when the economy is in free fall, unemployment is rising alarmingly, yet what do they do, introduce a law that may put certain people out of business, lose tax on sales, and add a few hundred more to the unemployment list.

Admittedly, it is probably a small percentage of people overall, but the crass archaic stupidity of these laws is mind boggling.

As ever, it depends upon who is the actual owners, and the amount of "influence" they are able or prepared to bring to bear on the matter.

 

It will be interesting to see, if these businesses are profitable, and if the owners, Thai or foreign, are unable to make appropriate arrangements, whether they will be bought at "fire sale prices", by whom (we will probably never know) and how they manage to continue to trade ( again we will probably never know).

interesting question, there is a huge difference between the words "order" and "purchase" 

 

when I order beers from Tesco there is no purchase until they are delivered and paid for.

or being able to use your smartphone??

I can buy the wine i like, but carrying the cases I buy when I restock is going to be a pain in the <deleted>.  I guess if I go in, buy the amount and types I want, I can then have it shipped to the condo to restock the wine cellar refrigerator.  Unknown how to get the craft beer that is hard to find, looks like the prices may go up as those are forced to enter into an agreement with a storefront in order to sell over the counter.
