Currently anyone entering Thailand needs to have insurance which offers coverage up to 100,000 THB.   Do you think that once the Covid situation has improved Thailand should continue to require foreign nationals visiting or residing in Thailand to have insurance?

If Thailand want tourists, perhaps they should look at Cyprus approach, free healthcare for covid19 patients and even pay the hotell expenses for dependents.

Those here on a long term basis should have the option to meet their own expenses.

Obviously those with the assets and the desire to commit to doing so should be allowed to self insure.  But, if those assets are not available insurance would be necessary.  However, individuals should not be forced to be obtain insurance through a select few Thai insurance providers.  Insurance from any reputable and viable insurer should be allowed whether in Thailand or from overseas.

I believe the requirement was for $100,000 USD, not THB.

self insurance is necessary or allow those who live here long term to pay into the social care system

It might be enough in most cases...I recently spent three days in hospital, intravenous antibiotics, meds, rehydration drip, VIP room (room with a bed)...........feed and watered.....all in 2000 Baht.

This is why I stay away from forums for information.

Is it 100,000 THB or USD Dollars I know which it is but again it misleads the hundreds of readers looking for information.

Why should Thailand (in effect Thai tax payers) pick up the tab for any foreigners ill health/accidents?........ unless they see it as a selling point to attract visitors.

I would favor a bonificad study of the real costs of long stay foreign residents and a transparent public education program showing the actuary statistics reflecting real costs ay government and private hospitals. For tourists coming, the same requirements as applied to foreign travelers to Europe and elsewhere. I am hopeful that the government of Thailand, in an inducement to retain retirees would produce an affordable national policy for those of us whose only residence is Thailand.

Yes, your right, every price for anything in Thailand should be in the Thai currency. There has to be an ulterial motive for not doing so, deliberately misleading people like the small print in some hotel bookings and restaurants.

So many of you got off topic. Should the insurance requirement for foreigners be continued? Yes until the vaccine is available. If a foreigner wishing to enter Thailand can show proof of Covid vaccination then there should be no further insurance requirement or quarantine. If no proof of vaccination then insurance should be mandatory for those people, but it should not be just from the nominated/approved Thai insurers.

I think it's not unreasonable to require health/travel insurance coverage from all foreign visitors.

Allowing people to self-insure is risky, as only few foreign visitors would be able to cover the cost of a major unforeseen medical emergency, if it came to that. It's not just a question of having the money, but also of being able to access it from abroad (and, worst case scenario, comatose). I don't see why Thailand or any other country would want that risk. The EU's Schengen countries have been asking for medical coverage since a long time.

No need the insurance.

for the tourist, -- they have their own insurance and covers a percentage in thailand.

For the retiree, they are covered by their own country.. anything happened in Thailand, they must pay for it and reimbursed at 80% or they have enough money to pay for their medical.

you do not need to buy insurance to visit  thailand or live in thailand.

The travelling insurance is a rip off. it does not cover well.

the main reason is the cost of medical in the Eu are quite high Coming from a 3rd world county like thailand, where the  cost of living is low , you need insurance to go and visit the EU. EU knows that most thai people never buy health insurance   .Eu never asked the American travelling to England for proof of insurance. to visit

Yes. Covid19 or not, any traveller should be equipped with travel insurance covering medical emergencies and other possible accidents.

The insurance must be reasonably priced.

Completely agree. Every foreigner is here by choice and has options. Government hospitals will save life and stabilise the patient before asking for money. Further surgery/treatment they will not perform without payment. Absolutely correct IMHO.

The last sentence destroys the point you were trying to make.

Family members of EU nationals are not required to have insurance, so if you want to make a comparison, then family members of a Thai national would not require insurance.

I would be surprised if americans would be happy with anything compulsory considering they protest at being asked to wear a mask.

I have never had insurance for anything, ever. So looks like thailand is off my list.

The insurance companies aint going to give up a nice big cherry

easily, and from the governments point of view, it helps keep some

of the riff raff out.  Oops, good bye Thailand.

‘Self-Insure’ is an oxymoron.

I am infavour for ALL TOURISTS to pay . Add 300 to 600 THB to each arrival On last years figures that would be 40,000,000 tourist times say 600 baht is a whopping 4,000,000,000 ($133,333,333 USD into the coffers)

It is irresponsible to yourself, your relatives and the society of a country to travel to any country without proper health- or at least travel insurance - therefore it should be mandatory for every one who enter Thailand.
