Is Thailand all about Face or what?.  How many other countries are hunting down officials or traffickers who have allowed the spread of Covid-19 into the country.  Covid knows no boundaries and it is a virus easily transmitted.  Once again FACE saving in its entirety.  Does anyone really believe that you can say it is someone's fault other than China's for the spread of this virus. Did they arrest anyone for allowing MERS into the country or bird flu or? Did they.  Just unbelievable hubris

Well, you asked, so in answer to your question most INTELLIGENT, educated, and informed people do NOT blame China, as intelligent people are well read and study the reports and statements of qualified epidemiologists. No one I know tries to oversimplify this to that extent. Are you an epidemiologist? There is in fact significant evidence that the virus was brought TO Wuhan from an outside source, whether a sick person or animal, and there began to spread in an ideal environment. There was a case in Europe as far back as December 2019. I think another one was found even earlier. Because covid was unknown at the time these were not immediately identified. So my suggestion to you, if you don't want to embarrass yourself with uninformed "opinions" and racist comments, and if you want your comments to be read with any credibility at all rather than just a waste of space and time, EDUCATE yourself, and that doesn't mean cherry pick through the internet for that which supports your prejudices. It's more work than that. So, if you're not too lazy to educate yourself, you might be able to fix stupid after all.

We're there's a brown envelopes there's a way, the temptation is to much for many Thai officials... ????

The temptation is that money brings expensive houses and cars and brings status, which is the driver of many aspects of the whole society/culture.

Especially when you see how much they are paid!

All about saving face. Face is rife with self doubt, and by subscribing to this weakness, a man or woman, or an official, is made a far lesser person. I consider the practice of face to be the polar opposite of the practice of Buddhism, which teaches the need for introspection, contemplation, owning up to a problem, and taking responsibility for issues, problems and tragedies that you create in life.

So my message to the administration is this. Man up. Admit you messed this one up badly. Admit the border could have been controlled if you had devoted the tens of thousands of soldiers required then, instead of now. You dropped the ball.

To put it bluntly it was an accident waiting to happen, and you are quite correct in what you say.

Also, for Thai officialdom there is the additional bonus that Covid was brought into the country by illegal immigrants, so the buck is passed - just a pity that they can't blame "dirty unwashed farangs" for it! Hang on, they want us back now - I forgot!

Yeh. What happened to the bar girls. All 20+ of them.... they are the cause of this spread especially the one who transmitted the virus to a woman on a flight to Bangkok...

she is the culprit and the one whom has spread the virus. She needs to be dragged into the streets for all the Thai people to see that a THAI brought this virus into the country.

Corruption??? Who could have thought of that?

Wonder also if clearing army personnel was done in response to somebody actually raising any suspicions, though I in doubt it.  Who could have displayed such lack of survival instincts?

These people are such outrageous clowns. It's like "hunting" for saltwater in the ocean. Just goto the border, mate, and find any Thai border official. Project done.

Another potential "wumao" spreading false China propaganda. You all should stop wasting your energy. The world has decided China is bad. And, we are collectively isolating them. Thank God.

The really famous Jonathan Swift was a satirist, and I would hope the one you are responding to should be seen that way; a satire of apologists.

Thanks for stating the obvious that people have forgotten; China needs to foot the global bill for all the economic and financial losses, suffering and deaths they inflicted on the world.

You can bet your last dollar you will not hear from the gutless UN or WHO asking China to cough up for their deception and malpractice of hiding and spreading this virus around the globe.

Sorry. I have a strong hatred for you know who. I become enraged even thinking about them. This whole global mess is on their shoulders and they will pay severely.

Corrupt officials ? The whole country is riven with them. And when it comes to money that overrides any possibility of a virus being imported.. that's a trivial matter !

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Wednesday tasked Deputy Defence Minister Chaichan Changmongkol with the job of catching corrupt Thai officials who allow illegal immigrants to enter Thailand.

Chaichan will lead the crackdown on border corruption thought to be behind Thailand’s latest outbreak of Covid-19, detected last week among Myanmar migrant workers in Samut Sakhon.

The country has six immigration offices and 93 checkpoints screening people who cross the border, but poorly guarded natural routes open a loophole for trafficking of migrant workers.

The locations of greatest concern are two points in Chiang Rai province, Tak’s Mae Sot district, and three points in Ranong province – all bordering Myanmar.

National police chief Suwat Jangyodsuk said that information about a trafficking gang helping immigrants cross the border was being investigated.

Royal Thai Armed Forces spokesman Chaowalit Sangkarit said initial investigations cleared Thai Army troops of involvement with the traffickers since the gang mostly operated by boat across the marine border in Ranong province.

A Royal Thai Navy spokesman insisted that all immigrants found crossing into Thailand by sea were documented and legal.

However, a source said the traffickers use regular border routes but bribe officials at the checkpoints to remain silent.

Prayut is thought to have a list of Thai officials suspected of being involved in the people-trafficking trade and is waiting for more evidence in their cases.

Chaichan will reportedly reveal the names of the suspects soon.

Why don’t you start with the official that allowed the first Thai girl in the country! From there you can get the whole plot/pot of officials..???????????????? Here is a easier way, offer more money than the corrupt officials would to keep their name clear.????????????????????????

Thailand corruption from the top down the TIT

it is happenning for years and will continue forever

1 Bangkok is not given great salaries to maintain the borders - they will resort to bribe for extra money

2 they are not given the supply to monitor the flow- like testing centers quarantine hotels, and medical services

3. who is paying the officials  not the gang but the big employers in the fish industry, construction...etc...

4. who isp aying for the $100k covid-19 insurance coming to thailand.. why people are exempts?

It shows that the scheme to "steal" money from farang is in place at the airport coming to thailand and it does not apply to others..

the government does not know how to run this country.

they can't make laws that the people can obey.

It looks to me as though someone has shot himself in the foot . . . For the PM (no less) to admit that there are corrupt officials in Thailand speaks volumes . . .

1) Set a clear punishment. Not some up to xx years or baht but just clear

2) no excuses etc... investigate, bring in front of a court. Sentence and apply.

Because EVERYTHING is linked to CORRUPTION here is is so extremely difficult to improve the country. With a culture where only money and power counts it's even more difficult. Almost everyone, in every job, is prepared to corrupt in order to make some more money.

Oh yes, don't forget, most Thai do not eat grass anymore. They are clever enough and can't be fooled if the Police or government only does half or less of a job...

Great comments.. No corruption in Thailand, take porn cds off the streets around Nana, while African working girls stand in lines along Suhkomvit Rd.

Oblivius to the police standing in front of them.

I did the 30 day visa runs for years, I know many borders very well, I sometimes stayed in the towns for fun in the old days.

One thing stuck out like dogs galls was people being used as cheap labour and smugglers crossing the border at will.

Along with the poor Burmese women carrying babies and begging, husslers selling fake jewellery and the police smuggling alcohol and cigarettes and casinos across the border, I always thought that sometime soon C19 would cross the stream along with staff of the enlightened one.

But last year he said there was no corruption ????

It might be quicker to just look for the ones who aren't corrupt and exclude them.

That way the process won't take very long at all.
