Roaming Internet on phone for Thai-Chana application

Recommended Posts

Hope I've selected the correct forum for this, if not feel free to relocate correctly.

The use of the much vaunted Thai-Chana track and trace system requires access to the internet when you scan a Q-Code, and I envisage a need soon to be able to do just that, e.g. no books, Thai-Chana mandated only.

I've 2 sims in the phone which are years old (True and DTAC) that I don't want to replace and work on the pay up front principal, does anybody know if I can just add Internet to one of them and what the costs are liable to be or do I have to get a new sim?

Let us know if that is enough for the application.

Thanks.

I'll give it a try next time I go anywhere that is using the Q-Code for access, most places I shop at don't have or don't use.

You can apply it now. It's a one time payment. Even after a year, as long as you use at least 10 baht on the SIM it will keep extending the package. Good enough on it's own for using text applications, such as WhatsApp. Useless for photos etc.

Before you spend anything on an Internet package, make sure there is at least 40 baht on the DTAC SIM and then apply *103*55*9# and then hit the dial key. That will apply an always on 64 kbps connection to the DTAC SIM, for at least a year. Let us know if that is enough for the application.

does AIS have something for a year ?

the one month for 29 baht seems not an option anymore ?

I have a Samsung tablet that comes with a Samsung Q-code download for confirming entry-exit.

The point was not how to read the Q-Code, that comes with any phone camera, but the need for internet access at the time you read it to connect to either Thai-Chana or Mor-Chana, depending on which one you loaded on your phone.

I only use the internet on my phone through a wi-fi connection.

I had never had or wanted an internet connection on my phone through my AIS account.  I might only use the internet through AIS a couple of times a month so paying for it monthly and not using it would basically be a waste of money.

I added Thai Chana to my phone to check it out and a couple of days later got a message from AIS that I needed to add money to my prepaid account.  I don't make many phone calls so I only added 50 Bt.  A day later I got the same message.  It finally sunk into me why my prepaid time was disappearing.

Thai Chana automatically turns on internet through AIS when it is installed.

I immediately removed the application and I'll keep scribbling my name when I go places.

I have 2 SIMS one with True and one with DTAC, neither were switched on automatically when I installed Thai Chana, nor was either activated on swiping the Q-Code, only got message "Connect to Wi-Fi".

And 50 Baht a day seems highly excessive, note the message from Eindhoven above.

The daily activation charge is about 40 Bt, which is why a 50 Bt refill lasted only a day.  If you want internet via your phone provider it is much less expensive to pay for it by the month than per day.

Personally having the internet everywhere I go and 24 hours a day simply isn't something I would use so I see no reason to pay for something I wouldn't normally use.

I can only say that Thai Chana apparently turned on the internet via AIS the first time I used the program.  Internet via AIS turned off once I removed the application.

I wasn't very worried about being traced at that time because there were no local transmissions of C-19 infections, only those brought into Thailand by visitors and detected during quarantine.  I had gotten tired of scribbling my name and phone number so I had intended to fake using the program.  With the current situation I will happily write my name and phone number so they can be read and I can be traced if necessary.

I hope all of you will wear masks, sanitize you hands frequently, observe social distancing as much as possible, and make sure you can be traced if necessary.

No, AIS only offers a monthly paid option(29 baht) or an free option if you top up 150 baht per month.

29 baht per month option should still work if you apply the corresponding code.

Perhaps you can stretch to the 29 baht per month for the 64 kbps connection. Should be enough for the application and any text based Chat such as WhatsApp.

More convenient than having to clean your fingers with alcohol every time to touch the communal pen or the paper on which you have to write. Plus you don't have to mess around toggling the Internet on and off. It can just stay on.

That package would be handy to run in the background for the odd times when my monthly data package misses an auto-renewal due to insufficient funds. When this happens, I need to top up and then re-apply the 30-day package. Am I correct in believing that this 1-year, low-baud package can run concurrently with any higher data-rate daily or weekly or monthly package? Apart from WhatsApp, LINE and email access, the only other data I access on the smartphone is streaming audio from Tune-In, BBC Sounds and the off podcast.

How much is the monthly package and I assume from what you say the package can be added to a "Pay as you go" type sim, and how can I apply for it, as my local shop is "no speaky da Englesh"

299 + tax for 30 days of max speed 6 Gb prepaid on DTAC. If you have the DTAC app installed, you can browse and select any package that fits your needs and budget without visiting any shop.
