Taxis at Suvarnabhumi: Airport chief reminds passengers of new baggage charges

The chief of Suvarnabhumi airport Sutheerawat Suwannawat told the Thai media that many taxi passengers were still not aware of new rules for bags that were introduced by the Transport Ministry on November 17th.

 

With New Year coming up he wanted to do some PR and tell the public again about the rules:

 

1. Taxi drivers can charge 20 baht for bags that are bigger than 26 inches.

 

2. For people carrying many smaller bags they can charge 20 baht for each one starting with the third bag. 

 

3. Large items like bikes, golf bags, wind surf boards and musical instruments that are 50 inches up will incur a charge of 100 baht.

 

4. Other 50 inch and up items in boxes or tied together also incur a 100 baht charge.

 

Taxi drivers must warn people about the charges before the commencement of journeys. Disputes should be raised with the counter on the first floor at the airport. 

 

Signage is in place at the airport and in each cab, reported 77kaoded. 

 

Sutheerawat also took the opportunity to remind passengers to wear masks at the airport and for all their journeys and also for taxi drivers to wear them at all times.

We had a long discussion with a taxi driver last week . (My Thai brother-in-law and myself.)

He wanted to charge 100 for a small case we carried from Bangkok to Thonburi. He eventually accepted 20 baht.

 

On the way back we asked the taxi driver how much he would charge for the bag. He was honest and said that it was only trips from the airport where people had to pay baggage charge.

I shouldn't be pessimistic, but i think we'll see a lot of arguments about this in the future.

How far can they go with the scams from the taxis from the airports?

In my opinion it is getting whorse for last couple of years. Or it is just me?

 

I use to pre book a taxi and then I pay 1000-1200 from Suvarnabhumi. In march 2020 I booked a taxi from a hotel close to the airport and then it was a fixed price; 1500 baht.

 

This february I was told at Don Muang that it was only by meter so I was thinking that it might be a bit lower price but was I wrong. Almost 2300 baht to Pattaya. From Pattaya fixed price 1300 baht.

 

Do they not understand that they are adding nails to their own coffins?

 

It is so sad to see and it is just arguments to visit other countries instead.

Although the taxi drivers are often dishonest at the airport, it has to be the cheapest taxi drive in the world. Where else would you get an aircon drive of 30km for $10?

I hope they put this in the holiday brouchers

So a normal amount of 2 x normal suitcases at 28 inches would get you a surcharge of 40 baht in addition to the airport surcharge of 50 baht?   90 baht extra on a 200 baht fare.....
