The Department of Thai Traditional Medicine is joining up with five state hospitals to start using Fah Talai Jone (Andrographis Paniculata) as a treatment option for early stage Covid-19 patients.

Dr Amporn Benjaponpitak, director-general of the department, said on Wednesday that finding an alternative was necessary now that there are so many new Covid-19 infections.

Tests on animals show that the herb contains substances that can reduce inflammation and may inhibit the replication of the virus. Tests on Covid-19 patients whose symptoms were not very severe showed them improving in three days without any side-effects.

The five state hospitals the department is cooperating with are Nakhon Pathom Hospital, Samut Sakhon Hospital, Ratchaburi Hospital, Ban Pong Hospital in Ratchaburi and Somdej Phra Phutthlertla Hospital in Samut Songkhram.

The herb can be used for patients aged between 18 and 60, who have mild respiratory symptoms such as cough, runny nose, sore throat. Patients can consume 180mg of Fah Talai Jone for five days in combination with modern drugs.

  • All those bagging herbal treatments seem to overlook that a vast majority of "modern" magic drugs started life as herbal treatments. But never let facts get in the way of ignorance.

I had a"fever" back in February. Caught it from my daughter who had been to a pop concert. Worst flue like symptoms I have had for years. The hospital gave me some, it worked a treat.

Good point. How many guys in their sixties and seventies are taking saw palmetto for their prostate, or ginseng to get horny?

Fah Talai Jone is an excellent natural medicine that strengthens the immune system, but for those who don't use their brains it doesn't work

They don't trust the vaccine which is being produced all over the world (except Thailand) , as was stated in a post yesterday, but they think that witch doctor recipe will work, this info can only come from a 3rd world Country of which Thailand is.

@Natai Beach maybe you can try this Thai wonder drug since you dislike western things so much. If this doesn't work, I can recommend a strong bowl of Somtam soup. Or a hearty bowl of Chinese bat soup.

don't you love when people that know NOTHING about traditional THAI herbs come empty their guts how it does nothing ...

It is used when you have fever, to prevent it goes out of control, like paracetamol, but more natural

not a wonder herb

I use it every time soar throat or fever hits me or my children, in conjunction with other known to us things we do to try to get over with, avoiding ANTIBIOTICS like most thai people seem to take for anything & everything

Correct, not far ting loud enough, a course of antibiotics and paracetamol will get you on the right track, available at your friendly pharmacist - repeat as often as needed ????

You were supposed to eat the contents not the box.......

"...finding an alternative was necessary now that there are so many new Covid-19 infections."

Thais generally expect a bag of pills when they visit the doctor. I imagine this alternative was pressed into action to appease that desire for doctors to do something/anything. Placebos often do aid in recovery... mind over matter... oh wait...

At least not so insane as to go the homeopathic route

A common discussion in Thailand:

Q. "What medicine did the doctor give you?"

A. "The red one."

Some of the symptoms from the virus can be reduced/alleviated by this medicine. It has been used for hundreds of years to treat those symptoms. Since these symptoms themselves can be for some life threatening, why not use it? I don't think anyone is claiming it is a cure, just another weapon in the armoury.

Strengthening or "boosting" the immune system is only desirable when the immune system is weakened. If it's already functioning normally then strengthening it would mean that it starts attacking things it shouldn't be attacking.

...and may inhibit the replication of the virus.

In other words, they have no idea if it can inhibit the replication of the virus.

"...and may enhance the replication of the virus"  could be just as true!

So easy  for some to  laugh when forgetting to consider how and why  so many  "herbal" remedies  came to achieve  a reputation for  effectiveness. Is there a singular claim for a specific  plant , seed , or extract? No!

No  denying that in modern medical terms the identification, concentration, or synthetic formulation of many natural ingredients has been common practice but that has now been  advanced  to major attempts  to control, deny, or ultimately  possess commercial  rights to highly effective  natural products.

I had a fever and flu like symptoms back in February too. Wife insisted I take Fai Talai Jone. Did absolutely nothing.

His wife does

maybe this helps some: I use this herb for over 15 years. When I feel flu symptoms coming up, I take 4 to 5 pills (in serious attack every 3 hours 4 pills) in the morning and the same for the evening. that goes on for 2 days. Then all symptoms have disappeared (every time!). Also I use it for any internal inflamation (e.g. tooth-ache)

It does not work so fast as a paracetamol, but it does work. I used to take the tea of the leaves, but switched to pills as the nickname "king of bitter" sure deserves every letter of it.

If they add a little pik nam pla, some pla la and a touch of Lao Khao I can't see any reason why it would'nt work!  ????
