excessive hair shedding (not loss) can be triggered by stress even a few months after a stressful event. Loosing a lot of weight over a short period of time can also trigger this. It should stop at some point if the stress is removed.

 

As a side note, we shed about 30,000 skin cells daily and we get a new stomach every month:)

Since his son has no visible thinning of hair or baldness I don't think there is any excessive shedding taking place. Just normal shedding. It is simply more visible due to the color and texture of Thai vs Western hair (and maybe the kid, like most kids,  doesn't clean up after himself that well)
