He means the UK Embassy wanted to downsize their staff and that was the excuse.

this far-too-overused phrase can mean anything these days, meaning it means nothing

  • Hmmm... So are dodgy visas & extensions of stay only ok if issued through immigration or a well known visa agent? Seems like a pretty harmless crime really considering it's a damn sight more

  • I wonder if it were a Thai agent would they then seek out all who had used their services....nah no chance.... too much loss in "pocket money" to the folks in Immigration here...

Last thing we all need is more crack downs and more hoops to jump. But at least I am squeaky clean. Let's hope they be cool on the ones who side step but are great folk. Still good guys so should stay in.

The big problem with Thai Immigration no longer accepting the sworn statements of US citizen (and others-I don't know the list) is that it means that a certain % of us who used to rely on the affidavit system will of necessity use agents, thus ensuring a large flow of cash into the offices to be distributed according to whatever system they use. A flow and amount that is in addition to whatever was happening before. So it looks like the system was changed expressly for that reason, not to keep ex-pats honest. And given the gravy, the system can never go back.

Or, you know, maybe they could have changed the rules so that people would follow the laws.

My understanding is that the BE only churned out 2,000 letters per year and at 3,000 +baht per letter that was considerable income

Considerable income to whom?  Are you suggesting that the British government gets all giddy when they collect 150K GBP?  It's a nice size of money for an individual but it's not even a rounding error for a government with a 2 trillion GBP economy.

Upset the Russians at your peril.

What'll they do? Invade?

They are by far the biggest country in the world. Have a big army. Friends with China. Many nuclear weapons. Superior technology.

This is time for little countries to make friends; not enemies.

Is there a quite unspoiled place with no Chinese, Russians and Indians? ????

And no! I'm not being a racist.. let's not even go there.

Oh, rumour has it there's some pristine island in the Gulf of Thailand with a beautiful hidden beach and lagoon; no Russians, Chinese, or Indians as I recall, though there were a couple of Bosnians there at one time.
