Thailand loses 1.45 million tourism jobs from pandemic: tourism group

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand has lost about 1.45 million tourism jobs during the coronavirus pandemic, including 400,000 in the first quarter, a private tourism group said on Monday, as the country gets ready to reopen to visitors to try to rescue the struggling sector.

Thailand expects about two million foreign tourists, mostly Chinese and Europeans, to visit Phuket this year after the nation’s most popular resort island reopens to vaccinated visitors from July 1.

MAE SARIANG, Thailand (Reuters) - Thai authorities on Monday denied forcing back more than 2,000 refugees who had fled air strikes in Myanmar, but a local official said it was government policy for the army to block them at the border and deny access to outside aid groups.

Haul of ammunition and explosives seized at Chiang Rai delivery service office

Police and military in Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Rai have seized more than 6,000 rounds of M16 ammunition and 52 hand grenades, shipped from the eastern province of Chon Buri via a private logistics company and believed to be destined for anti-Myanmar rebel forces near the Thai border.

ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - Shipping was on the move again late on Monday in Egypt's Suez Canal after tugs refloated a giant container ship which had been blocking the channel for almost a week, causing a huge build-up of vessels around the waterway.

13 areas in northern Thailand suffering with excessive amounts of PM2.5 today

Thirteen areas in the northern provinces, especially Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, were found to have PM2.5 dust in the atmosphere at levels which exceed the 50-micron safety standard, with Wiang Pang Kham sub-district in Chiang Rai recording 247 microns.

PHUKET: In the search for a man wanted for shooting a handgun into the air three times at the Chaofa Villa 3 housing estate in Wichit last Wednesday night (Mar 24), police have arrested and charged the man’s father for illegal possession of ammunition.
