I have a visit to do this procedure at BPH with Dr Pornchai. I am 72 and will be getting a local injection to have no pain.

I looked on the internet for reports and  a lot said -never again!!  I am quite anxious -scared if I am honest.! Any one had this Procedure at BHP to allay my fears. I have 3 ultrasound and 1 CT scan which reports  -abrupt narrowing at left distal ureter UVJ  area without focal mucosal  lesion or opaque stone, could be due to stricture   or fibrosis  or due to chronic cystitus.  Cystoscope MAY be helpful.

I do not recall anyone specifically doing this at BPH but over the years many TV members have had cystoscopy done.

The local anesthetic used is usually not an injection but rather a gel which numbs the urethra. Sometimes IV sedation is also given and you could ask about that (will add to the cost).

Even without the sedation, and only the gel, the procedure itself is usually not very painful. After the procedure, however, there may be some irritation and pain on urination for a few days. You can ask the doctor to prescribe a drug called  Phenazopyridine to take for a few days afterwrads to relieve/avoid this. It will turn your urine reddish orange so don't worry if you see that.

Drinking water with a spoonful of sodium bicarbonate to alkalize the urine will also decrease discomfort afterwards.

Bear in mind that people only tend to post on the internet if they had a problem, what you see there is nto typical of all patients.

I had a flexible Cystocopy in the UK about 10/11 years. Anaesthetic isn't needed, & apart from a little discomfort - & no pain, it was all straitforward.

Bit of blood in my urine afterwards.

Don't be scared, it's no big deal.

Chok Dee!

Rubbish... i had several of them in Oz looking at my bladder and kidneys, painful procedure if you are not under, asked to be put under at any cost and you'll feel a thing, ask the urologist to lubricate the instrument well so it will not scar your urine tubes and save you bleeding and burning sensations when peeing..

Thank you both, Sheryl and Faraday, for your reassuring replies. I would be happy with the gel. I am not keen on sedation. Will they give me a choice.? I have been quoted 20,000 Baht. Does that seem reasonable.?

Please note the fourth word in my first sentence.

There are two types of Cystocopy:

That's why your comment is not only rude, but inaccurate.

A cystoscopy at a doctor's office in the US costs between $250 to $500.
I have no idea what bells and whistles they say they're adding to the procedure in order to charge you 20k THB.  They probably dress up in operation gowns and wheel you into a operation theater and make a show of it.
The procedure can be done in a doctors office.  They shoot a syringe full of Lidocaine up your urethra, wait a couple of minutes and push a cystoscope in.  Not too bad until they get to the bladder sphincter.  Pushing through that was painful.  Very unpleasant.  But, your mileage may vary.  We all have different pain thresholds.

Here in Thailand where costs are usually significantly lower than the US, I don't particularly see how they justify a 20,000 THB ($650) price tag for this procedures.  Sounds like you're at a private hospital.  You may want to check with a government hospital or a urologist at a private clinic who can perform the procedure at his own office, then you don't have the hospital overhead.  For here in Thailand?  That's over priced when compared to US prices which are generally the most absurd health care prices in the world.  You may want to check around if you're paying out of pocket.

Luckily the money is not a problem for me. I was just asking for comparison with others. I have excellent medical insurance but like the majority of people I do not have OPD cover. The cover for that is just astronomical. I appreciate the replies.
