In celebration of World Malaria Day  – under the theme “Reaching the zero-malaria target” –  on Sunday, the government announced that there have been no malaria deaths in Cambodia since 2018. Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday issued a letter to celebrate World Malaria Day and said this milestone: “Means that our country can control malaria effectively, even though Cambodia is still combating the COVID-19 pandemic.”

He said that in 2020, there were 9,227 malaria cases in Cambodia with no deaths, a decrease of 71 percent compared to the same period in 2019, when there were 31,971 cases. He added that there were 936 cases of plasmodium falciparum malaria last year, a decrease of 81 percent compared to the same period in 2019, in which there were 4,990 cases.

Mr Hun Sen said that Cambodia aims to eliminate all malaria cases by 2025, and plasmodium falciparum malaria by 2023. “I suggest that all relevant authorities continue their efforts to combat it to reach our goal,” he said.
