The number of positive cases found via Active Case Finding (random sampling) dropped significantly overnight from 231 to 152. That means that 400+ extra new cases came from contact tracing and walk-ins.

My read is that the positivity rate is declining nationwide but there are some hot spots being addressed now.

Your read is pure speculation however, those hotspots and clusters are all part of the bigger picture on the infection here in Thailand, the overall numbers are the ones that count.

There was 1,995 found through hospital walk ins and contact tracing, you don't just leave those completely off the positive rate.....to do so paints a very artificial figure of the overall situation in Thailand.

Have you seen how much testing is going on?

Not likely. Expect double digit deaths into June.

If deaths remain at  double-digits, wouldn't that be a sign that it's being contained?  People were predicting deaths in the tens of thousands at one time.

Treatment? Really? What treatment do you think a poor Thai will receive?

If the ICU is full, where will the poor Thai be "treated"? I don't think private for profit will offer ICU capacity because it will be used for VIP or someone with money. The military ICU beds are reserved for government and military, are they not?

I think the critical care lower caste person might get is oxygen, anti inflammatory and access to a ventilator if it is available.

For the few who have bad symptoms, im sure any treatment would be better than sitting it out at home?

And then possibly infecting other family members and friends who drop by to see or have a meal with sick "Pee".

Its looking obvious by now, these field hospitals are meant first and foremost for getting the infected out of "circulation" and avoiding infecting others.

Is the government negligent?

Maybe, but i feel sorry for both them and the people.

I think the government didnt want to squash the peoples spirits by completely ruining 2 consecutive Songkrans.

And we all knew right along that Thais wouldnt handle long term isolation to easily.

They've never liked being dictated to, and there was only so much they could take.

I guess they are paying the price now,

but im predicting they will recover ok,

now that the general population realises this thing is real and serious.

The National Health Security Office (NHSO) has decided to provide up to THB400,000 in compensation to those who have been permanently disabled or for deaths caused by Covid-19 vaccines. The amount was set by the NHSO committee on Monday.

Anyone predicting tens of thousands of deaths in Thailand from Covid was just blowing smoke, based on actual data.

It is possible that the infection could spread, if not contained, and over months, turn into another India. Possible, but extremely unlikely. Thailand is quite good at contact tracing at the current level of infections.  If there are bad hotspots, they will cordon them off, effectively quarantining them.

There has been no sign that Songkran has led to uncontrolled spread in the provinces. The doomsayers have been wrong.

However, a worrisome sign would be infection rate increasing nationwide, not just in hotspots. Let's see how this goes.

Huai Khwang fresh market closed seven days for disinfection and screening

Huai Khwang fresh market in Bangkok was ordered closed for seven days on Monday, after two employees were found to be infected with COVID-19.

The Din Daeng district office, which ordered the closure, also declared the market off-limits to all outsiders, while those living inside the market area are prohibited from leaving.

The district’s health officials will conduct screening of about 300 traders and employees, many of them migrant workers from Myanmar, on Thursday.

We're fairly stable around 2,000 (a couple of days doesn't mean a clear trend) and the Songkran window is closing but I still think we really have to be on our toes here. The virus quietly brewed in Lombardy for weeks before it took off, it did the same in New York, then it exploded with a vengeance. And that was a less contagious strain.

I don't like these around 2,000 per day figures. Sure, IMO anyway, the Thai contact tracing has been first class, still is, but they easily could lose this one if it doesn't start to go down soon. Contract tracing could get overwhelmed and it's enough if a few of the 10?, 20?, 30? thousand they try to contact every day can't be reached (and is infected) and we could have a few more clusters every day.

Hospitals will get / are already overloaded. They are switching to quarantine at home so most or at least many of the other family members in the house hold will get infected.

IMO, the Thai economy will lose much more not controlling this than what a lockdown will cost. Why? Most business will still go on as usual, factories will still produce and export. Only smaller parts of the Thai economy will be shut down. And what about the future tourism? Westerners with their gung-ho attitude to covid-19 will still come during 2022 but Asians will not! And income from Asian tourism is much greater than Western tourism.

The next 15 days will decide I think

why would you think that Asians spent more then Western ?  Have you have counted the number of average stay per visitor ? Europeans dont fly her for the weekend. The average is at least 10-14 days.

New infections up a tad...but a good percentage drop in deaths; hopefully this means we are nearing the end of the death spike from the record infections of last month attributed to Songkran.

...You've been saying this for weeks. The infections due to songkran spread to others who spread to others. The Ro. Do you think some sort of line comes down 3 wks after songkran. Means nothing. It's a pandemic with a particulalry virulant strain spreading across Thailand. Coming soon the Indian variant may well join in. There is no way this is under control. If you think it is well that's up to you.

I presume the infected are getting dragged away to these field hospitals regardless of if they have money or not.

So one would think it must be free for Thais?

Yes, it's free just like prison, if you go there there's generally no bill to pay.

The number of new confirmed cases remains fluctuating after the announcement of dining hours restrictions on April 16. CCSA spokeswoman Apisamai Srirangsan said 66 new cases were found during active case-finding operations in slum communities around Lumpini Park, 162 in total.

Foreign Ministry cautions Thais over ‘vaccination tours’ to US

The Foreign Ministry is cautioning Thais about availing of tours to the United States for the sole purpose of receiving Covid-19 vaccinations. Some tourism agencies have announced US tour packages for those who want to be inoculated in that country.

The packages were in response to a US regulation that allows people on arrival aged 16 or over to be vaccinated.

However, the ministry explained that the regulation can differ from state to state and said that some states will vaccinate only US citizens.

It won't be long before various other countries in South East Asia begin offering vaccinations for foreigners.

When many foreigners in Thailand begin leaving to places like Cambodia to get their vaccines because they've been banned from vaccination in Thailand it won't be a good look and it will for sure be reported widely around the world.

I imagine a headline of something like 'Foreigners flee Thailand due to vaccination ban', you know how the media like to hype things up.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) timeline to reopen six major tourist provinces – Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga, Surat Thani (Ko Samui), Chon Buri (Pattaya) and Chiang Mai – to foreign tourists who have received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine is going ahead as scheduled in line with the country’s COVID-19 vaccination timeline.

Phuket will be the first destination to lift quarantine requirements for vaccinated foreign tourists under the ‘Phuket Sandbox’ programme, starting from 1 July, 2021. Tourists will be required to spend the first seven days on the island, before travelling to other Thai destinations.

In preparation to welcome vaccinated foreign tourists, authorities are working on vaccination programme to safely achieve herd immunity against COVID-19 for 70% of Phuket’s population, including residents, workers in tourism-related businesses, and migrant workers.

Yep. Open up up schools when the CCSA is very concerned about transmission in families then send the kids to school.

As the daily new COVID cases being reported jump up and down, a look at Thailand's cases based on a rolling seven-day average -- which is one key indicator used by many health agencies -- shows the country has already reached a peak and is now on a downward, moderating trend, at least through May 3.

That's driven at least in part by the fact that today's new cases update, and those in recent days, have remained below the single day new cases highs of 2,839 set on April 24 and 2,438 set on April 25.

At a 10% positivity rate in that area, that’s 2000 new cases over the next 20 days, 100 new cases a day. Assuming the positivity rate doesn’t go down.
