The first case of the Indian COVID-19 variant, or B.1.617.1, has been found in Thailand, in a Thai family returning from Pakistan and in state quarantine, according to CCSA assistant spokesperson Dr. Apisamai Srirangsan.

The case involves a 42-year old pregnant Thai woman, who returned to Thailand from Pakistan on April 24th with three sons, aged 4, 6 and 8, with a stopover in Dubai.  All entered state quarantine in a hotel. The woman stayed in one room with the youngest son while the two others were in a separate room.

On April 26th, all were given COVID-19 tests, which returnedpositive results for the woman and her 4-year old son, while the two other boys were cleared of the disease.

Luckily, it was discovered in quaranten. However, it's probably already spread here, brought by the illegal boarder crossers.

  • Perhaps you do not yet realise the social and psychological damage that these health protocols are doing on the quiet.

  • The genome sequence was uploaded to the international GISAID data base on May 9.   Type:    betacoronavirus Clade    G Pango Lineage    B.1.617.1 Collection date:    2021-04-26

Being a hotel, I would think it was an adjoining room with connecting door in the bedroom. Not ideal but better than total separation.

They will survive two weeks in a hotel. Unlike many of those who get the virus.

It's probably already in Myanmar. Next stop. Thailand.

No worries. We have been assured Thailand's response has been amongst the best in the world.

I hope she’s not a “Do you know who I am type.” Otherwise she’ll be out in no time.

Pregnant as well so 2 for the price of 1 on her infection. Wish the family the best.

So what you would let them roam around and infect others.  Come on now. Be at least responsible and not foolish.  You can not send them home to self quarantine.  Do you think that would really work out with kids. They would be outside running around.

The genomic sequencing must take time to verify the variantbof Covid-19

Lets face it, there's zero chance of stopping this coming in, they can take all the measures possible as they are quite rightly doing but it only takes one case to slip through and the damage is done. By the time they have sequenced the strain it'll already be spread in the community.

Its an unfortunate fact. Just like the UK strain it will lead to more outbreaks.

I fear it won't be too long before Thailand develops its own mutated strain.

Solution? In my opinion there is none aside from the obvious, preventive measures and vaccines. If you reside in Thailand we're in for the long haul now.

Unfortunately yes...Not just in Thailand but almost everywhere else too.

Must really have wanted to come to Thailand ! Pregnant and three kids and jets from Pakistan to Bkk via Dubai . Hassle of organising that and then cost makes me wonder why she would be so eager to come back to Thailand ????

May be following the Thai governments advice for all nationals to return home?

The very long haul!

Cannot wait for the ill conceived Hotel Association pushed at any cost Phuket Sandbox to do away with quarantine and let every one back in ....... watch the rapid implosion unfold.

Type:    betacoronavirus
Clade    G
Pango Lineage    B.1.617.1

Collection date:    2021-04-26

Host:    Human
Additional location information:    Travel history from Pakistan and detected on day 3rd after arrival in a state quarantine facility
Gender:    Female
Patient age:    42

Submission Date:    2021-05-09
Submitter:    Wacharapluesadee, Supaporn

For those who like to dis Thailand, Supaporn Wacharapluesadee is Thailand's own batwoman. She was the first person to sequence the SARS-2-CoV virus outside of China from a patient on Jan 8, 2020.  China had so far refused to release the genome and only did so on January 12, probably because of  Supaporn's work.

I believe he was just expressing surprise that a 6 year old and an 8 year old would be isolated in their own room for two weeks by themselves without a parent or guardian, not suggesting that they skip quarantine.
