Starting today (Tuesday), people who suffer from mental or developmental disorders, such as autism, Down Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or learning disabilities and their family members who live in Bangkok and three other neighbouring provinces can register for COVID-19 inoculation online.

The registration, through a Google form in Thai, opens for 10 days from today until May 20. Inoculations start from May 28, between 08.30-16.30 at the Rajanukul Institute Department of Mental Health.

The programme, pioneered in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Pathum Thani, is a cooperation between the Department of Empowerment of Persons With Disabilities and the Rajanukul Institute Department of Mental Health.

Why only for 10 days?

I'm curious why those with "mental disorders" are prioritized over healthy individuals.

Maybe this is the government's way of reaching out to the expat community and getting us vaccinated?

Some mental disorders also are a true medical situation where medications are needed daily to assist the individual.

Emerging data also indicate that people with schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses have also been hard hit by the pandemic. Individuals with schizophrenia, for instance, are nearly 10 times more likely to contract COVID-19 and are nearly three times more likely to die from it if they do fall ill, compared with individuals who do not have a mental illness.

Why only four provinces.... answer to both questions.... not enough vaccines to go around !

Perhaps because the assumed associative intellectual impairment increases the risk of non compliance with mitigation requests as much as  immunosuppression due to prescribed medications? ?

Some people with mental problems are very difficult to control and refuse to wear a mask, social distance etc.

A recent example being the covid positive American in Thailand who spat the covid infected dummy and left the hospital that had been kindly provided for him because his wife was requested to stay in another room.

Another about a month ago was the American spitting on Thai people.

And there have been many cases of "Karens" with learning difficulties refusing to mask up or social distance being found in beer bars in Pattaya, pool parties in Phuket, Shisha parties in Bangkok and giving the finger and ranting when asked to wear a mask in public who might be suffering from Tourette's.

They are a danger to themselves and the general public. Clever move to get them fixed up.

Schiz was the one indication I was thinking of where people might be at greater risk due to self control issues.  Maybe bipolar as well. People with OCD and/or agoraphobia might actually be better off.  But the way that Thailand is calling this out seems strange since I don't recall western countries formally doing this AND people in Asian countries with mental health issues are typically under-represented and under-treated due to stigma and lack of appreciation that mental health issues are true medical issues.  Are those with drug addiction or alcoholism also included in this? Doubt it.  I think that those who register under this criteria will be a tiny percentage of those who are affected with a mental disorder. (except the expats ????)

Or maybe it's part of the government's daily drip of press releases to make it look like there is action

Well, hot dog! I qualify. As a member of alien farangs, we are all accused of being mentally unstable. Yeah!

I hope they force a jab on that crazy anti-masker from Chiang Mai. Any decent archer can administer it from a distance.
