I have a new internet connection ... Loxinfo leased line (speed @ 256). Will post a report after a week or so of use.

My question is in regard to the wireless router/server or "base station" in Mac-speak.

Loxinfo installed a 2.4 Ghz Linksys Wireless-G "Access Point". (802.11g) This is what is operating now.

However I also have a new Mac Airport Extreme Base Station sitting on my shelf. It's 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and also has 802.11n.

Of course I have a Mac with 802.11n capability.

My question is .... will I notice any wireless internet speed improvement by using the Mac Airport Extreme instead of the Linksys.

Probably I'll mess around with it on the weekend anyway. But in the meantime just wondering if there is any point.

You will NOT see any increase in internet speed. Remember, your plan is for 256 kb/s. That's 0,256 mb/s. A "G" version wireless router runs at 54 mb/s. So technically, you're only using 0,047% of the available speed of your Linksys when browsing the web. This is of course assuming that you can reach the maximum speed of either.

However, if you have other n capable products that will attach to your network (and please remember that there is no IEE definition of "n" capable yet, that's why you see everything designated as "draft n") and they are Apple brand which increases the chance that compatability is assured, file transfers will go much faster.

Now, as to which is more stable.....I don't know. That really would be the only reason I would switch them.

well... give it a shot. the Airport Express with draft-N should have better range, e.g. good signal everywhere in the house and around.

as dave_boo pointed out, the speed of your internet is limited by your DSL connection so internet speed won't improve.

the main advantage of draft-N is range. draft-N is especially better when there are obstacles between the base station and the client - e.g. inside the house.
