Continuing what has become its new normal lately, Thailand on Thursday reported more than 2,000 new COVID cases for the eighth consecutive day, including new prison cases now for seven of the past eight days.

The 2,636 new case total marked Thailand's fifth highest daily total of the pandemic. Because of the continuing surge of prison cases now totaling a cumulative 13,597, all four higher daily new case totals had come in the past week, including the peak of 9,635 total daily cases on May 17.

Without the 671 new prison cases reported Thursday, the nation's 1,965 new general population case tally marked the third consecutive day of increases, but also the broader trend of those numbers regularly bouncing just above and below the 2,000 new cases mark.

The 25 new deaths reported Thursday brought the nation's official COVID death tally to 703, but the number was a decline from the pandemic record 35 deaths reported Tuesday and then the 29 reported Wednesday.

Thailand also reported on Thursday 2,268 COVID patients had been released from some kind of hospital facility (regular hospital, field hospital or hotel-hospital) compared to the 2,636 new cases, meaning the hospitalized population increased again from 41,903 to 42,246.

Of those, as shown in the light blue box below, the share of patients listed in critical condition increased by three over the past day to 1,213, while the share of those requiring respirators to breathe also increased by three to 405.

The rolling seven-day daily averages of new COVID cases and deaths in Thailand both continued to set record levels in the latest data update through May 18.

The daily average of new COVID cases for the past week reached 3,804, while average daily COVID deaths exceeded 28, with the case count driven in large part by a widespread COVID outbreak in the nation's prisons.

Public health authorities often look at rolling seven-day averages of COVID cases and deaths to judge how the pandemic is faring.

Vaccinations Update for Thursday:

First section is total new doses for the past day, with first and second dose subtotals. The lower section is cumulative doses thus far, with first and second shot subtotals. Thailand thus far has given first doses to more than 2 percent of its 70 million population, but only fully vaccinated more than 1 percent.

Street hawkers risk COVID-19 infection to make a living

Despite the new wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has seen many more cases and deaths than last year, many street hawkers and vendors are still out and about in Bangkok to earn money, even if it means putting themselves at risk of getting infected.

One such hawker told Thai PBS that she still has to sell her traditional Thai dessert, called “Khanom Tom” or coconut balls, to make a living. She said, because of the pandemic, however, she only sells half of the 10 kilograms she used to sell per day.

“My income is much lower than before, because people are too scared to go out. Before the pandemic, I managed to earn 1,000 baht a day. Now I earn only 500. That’s down by half. I’m also scared of being infected, because I’m out on the street, but I have to do it.”

Yes cases outside prisons seem to be around 2000 all the time. Its constant no change. So they are controlling it in a way. I mean the lockdown is helping but  not enough. I doubt that it will change anytime soon. These numbers are here to stay. So no relaxation anytime soon in BKK.

Makes things quite boring, but unless the vaccinate everyone this will never go away.

Sticking to the prison cases + 2000 formula it would appear.

Thailand on Thursday reported a lower number of new Covid-19 infections both inside and outside prisons at 2,636 cases and 25 new deaths.

The Public Health Ministry said that in the past 24 hours there were 2,636 new patients, with 671 in prisons. The death toll meanwhile increased by 25.

Some 2,268 patients have recovered and been discharged.

Cumulative cases in the country stand at 119,585, with 703 deaths.

Yep, as long as the people who go to the hospital with symptoms continues at this pace, we are going to see 2000 new cases a, day.

This works out to about 250-300 hospital beds freed up today.

Just curious what your point is. I mean this just proves that the virus ratio stays the same its not getting worse its not getting any better either. So yea these numbers will probably stay unless people are vaccinated. I wonder if the hospitals can keep going.

Government has to loan extra money for the economy (was in the news a few days back) seems there is a big shortage of money.

How do you work that out when there are more new cases than releases?Do you even read the reports or have you already made up your mind what it is?

Unless you're deciding once again to ignore the prison population cases numbers, because you think they don't deserve to be counted?

Beds keep filling up as more fill beds then are released. Try again. Look at the new field hospital now up and running as well.

I'm wondering about all the clusters. Maybe we have to wait a big longer for the numbers to come through.

Chonburi Public Health Office announces 65 confirmed, new cases of Covid-19 this morning, a jump in cases

chonburi520.jpg?resize=695%2C960&ssl=1

The Chonburi Department of Public Health announced 65 new and confirmed cases of Covid-19 today, which is a jump in cases from having 39 yesterday. (May 20th). Chonburi has significantly stepped up testing at industrial estates and workplaces, doubling the number of daily tests in the province, which is a major reason cases rose due to findings in Mueang Chonburi related workplaces.

This makes a total of 3,874 cases of Covid-19 in the current round of infections, with 955 still in medical care, with a total of sixteen recorded deaths in Chonburi since the start of this recent round of infections in early April.

Maybe they can approach a certain person, no names mentioned for a big loan, interest free of course ?

The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has pointed out that the two factors which are important for boosting Thailand’s economy this year are global trade and progress in the COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

NESDC secretary-general Danucha Pichayanan said Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) in the first quarter of this year contracted by 2.6%, because the third wave of COVID-19 infections has hurt the economy and tourism industry.

He said, however, it was a marked improvement from the 4.2% contraction in the fourth quarter last year.

Because the 600 infected prisoners do not go into the general population hospitals.

Another day, another BS.

It is just incredibly incredible that daily cases outside prisons are around 2000.... every single day.

The virus must be doing a 90 day report to be controlled with such a precision.

I've noticed some report the number of clusters as if it's the low number that is important.

I see they're locking them in now the so-called "bubble and seal" Poor buggers their conditions are dreadful to start with. The numbers must go up as like Samut Sakhon they are all locked up together. 34 clusters this virus will run amok.

With yesterdays announcement by CCSA that the overall positivity rate in Bangkok through active case finding is 7%. Then take into account that Hospital walk in cases positivity rate is always higher, then you have a situation where the virus is certainly not receding in Bangkok and there is clearly not enough testing going on.

On the 17th May they hit another peak with 2,773 not counting the prisons. Lots more testing was going on that day looking at the official published charts from CCSA

The resort town of Pattaya today started inoculating its population with Sinovac vaccine. The city initially received 20,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine from the government.

Yes, this helps them to wrap it all up, they can just infect themselves, no need to test. Just remove those who get too sick. Job done. No thought for the care and attention of those locked inside

Yes they do, the serious cases go to a regular hospital bed and the less serious go into field hospital beds made for infected inmates and the total number of available hospital beds decreased today!
