BANGKOK (NNT) - The Public Health Ministry has confirmed that more AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine will be delivered on schedule next month, after some vaccination centers reported that they had run out of AstraZeneca shots and had only the Sinovac vaccine left.

Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Monday that Thailand will take delivery of another lot of AstraZeneca vaccine in June, adding that, if the shots made in Thailand are not ready, the company will have to find them from somewhere else to fill the order, as stipulated in the contract.

He said the company is well aware of Thailand’s vaccination schedule, implying it is prepared to fill the order, regardless of whether the local production facility is ready.

According to the government’s plan, vaccination of people aged 60 and over, and those with any of seven underlying conditions who have registered through Mor Prom mobile application and health volunteers, will begin on June 7th.

  • That's as vague as it gets - "more", "another lot", and most importantly, "the company will have to find them from somewhere else". Yeah, right.

You can't make this up.

Might be, at best.

Straight from The Department of Making Things Up

Looks like a very easy and quick process to bring in vaccines from foreign countries - if they want it to be.

Not so quick if there's already a queue.

That’s about as much as an admission you’ll get from Anutin that local production won’t meet its promised quota. That, and the stretching the second shot out to 16 weeks (which is a good strategy if you don’t have enough for second shots…giving more people partial immunity from one shot is better than fewer people with full immunity).

I’m partially sympathetic. Most country’s producing it had teething problems and it was probably to be expected that Thailand’s local Astra  would too.  You’d just wish they would be more transparent about it.

So Sinovac it is then.

The EU hasn't renewed orders beyond june from from Astra-Zeneca. So maybe that will free up some vaccine for the rest of the world.

Another load of BS he's talking again, another 5 million due to arrive, which will never arrive....

Also, since a lot of EU countries don't want the AZ doses they are getting now they may donate/sell some of those.  Those would most likely go to COVAX though and Thailand isn't a part of that.

The Thai gov't is saying the contract requires the manufacturer to supply those 6 million doses in June no matter what.  If they can't manufacture that amount they are on the hook to import the difference.  That is a shrewd stipulation if true.   For the right price I'm sure they could find a few million doses somewhere.

Delivering more AZ next month on schedule is not the issue - delivering ALL the AZ on the miraculous schedule they have been banging on about is.

I'd like to know which ministers/generals will be forced to resign when they only get about half - none probably

Talking the virus to death is still not working as even Anutin must now see ????

More is  the  difference between 1 and 2, a  meaningless  figure.

Because the EU had no problems with AZ when they couldn't meet the order, EU just clicked their fingers and AZ just shipped the shortfall overnight????

But  they'll  all get a newly minted Covid  memorial Badge to stick on their  lapels.

OK, setting AZ up to take the blame/fall.

anutin is quick to absolve himself of all personal and professional responsibility.

The equivlaent of the bus driver in the fatal accident claiming brake failure and doing a runner.

This will be messy, court cases, litigation, plane siezure. oh my.

Uh oh.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but surely the Health Minister should know exactly when the vaccines will be ready?

Well firstly, yes I would expect so, and will the expected numbers be delivered on schedule, as I read different elsewhere?

He's pretty sure they will be ready "next month".

Unfortumately "next month" rarely arrives, it's always one month away.

And people say he isn't smart.

They are, you can see right through any of these government statements.

All the Az plants had ramp-up issues, it's what's caused the problems in the EU, why would the local plant be any different?

Except that the government stated they'd go straight to 6 million in the first month. Now revised to 1.5 million last I read.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Uhm, experience?

Surely businesses learn from mistakes and improve. Or are you saying everyone just repeats their old mistakes forever?

10X, Continuous Improvement, etc.

What an odd outlook on reality.

It's a new plant making a product that the company hasn't produced before (a vaccine), why would anyone doubt there would be issues with initial production?

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

6 million in June and then 10 million every month thereafter was the plan.....

I don't know what the problem is, but assuming their issues are the same as"the EU" as you stated, then these should have been accounted for, and been wholly avoidable.

But it is good to have an apologist, if only to balance the comments.

I think everyone with an ounce of sense knew that 6 million in June ramping up to 10 million per month was complete and utter nonsense. Why then would a) they even say it b) not make contingency plans c) manage people expectations...

I presume in part everyone is scared to say anything...

They can say or claim what they like, the company will never be officially held to any promises, or need to give genuine explanations for any failures.
