CCSA Assistant Spokesperson Dr. Apisamai Srirangsan

New COVID-19 infections in Thailand reached 4,528 Sunday, including 1,902 cases in prisons, and 24 more deaths.

CCSA Assistant Spokesperson Dr. Apisamai Srirangsan expressed her concern over the increasing trend of new infections in Bangkok, its suburbs and in some provinces, saying that they may overwhelm the capability of the health system, unless the rising curve is flattened. She urged everyone to help in reducing the number of new infections.

Cumulative infections, since April 1st, have soared to 125,444, including 19,008 being treated in general hospitals and 29,043 in field hospitals. 1,209 are severe cases, including 389 who are on ventilators.

Well I'm not worried at all. We've had dozens of expats in the forums telling us how magnificently Thailand has been handling the response.    I'm sure there is no better place to be.

Looks like it's still only just getting started, in the 'foothold' / 'ramp up' stage as far as I'm concerned.

I find it hard to believe that Thailand can try to push itself as a hub of health care when it falls apart with less than say 3% of UK infections and 1% of UK deaths

Yes, pride comes (came) before the fall.

A cautious and competent govt would have thanked their lucky stars for avoiding the original Wave One, then immediately set out to order the then-under development vaccines in sufficient quantity to inoculate the population. They also would have begun setting up a distribution system for when the vaccines arrived.

Instead, they patted themselves on the back and barked to others about how well they handled it, when in fact they still do not know why they escaped the early surge. Their hubris is coming back to haunt them.

Now, as many countries have the virus pretty well under control, it has gotten out of hand here. Claims about vaccine availability are empty words. Thais I know who signed up have been given first jab dates in late July and into August. And that's just the first jab, and a job of a vaccine (Sinovac) that isn't particularly effective and has more side effects than the others.

I’m sure it’ll all be fine in the hub of vaccines with the all-inclusive, world class program that will be launched next week.

  • Popular Post

Well the result of incompetence... No vaccines available, and if  available all kind of problems to get them into the country, very slow vaccination program , if there is one anyway, Misleading figures all the time , lack of good measures, because the tourists and domestic travel have to be promoted.. and now it is getting out of hand we complain.. So Sinopharm 20 mill doses .. Let them come instead of charging for incorrect paperwork, Pfizer, Sputnik, etc same... and don't delay all the time.. I think it will get worse by the day

That would be true if you take the overall statistics  including   the previous year where we had very few cases. Thake this new wave on it's own and the statistics change drastically Not much different when the UK or the US was going through .its first wave before the vaccine..

Can't see why they are overwhelmed, they've only had a year to prepare for getting hit like many other countries. They also have plenty of successful models and science to follow but refuse to do so. Good thing none of them need to worry about re-election

Hub of making money out of healthcare perhaps

To prepare for what? They thought they were going to escape mass infections like the other countries.

Remember when we used to speculate, why Thailand has so few cases, There even was a thread about it in this forum. Some thought that Thais were immune to covid 19.

So they were prepaying,

they were preparing to escape major infections and come out the other end smelling like roses.

That's because people are in ICU's for  3, 4 weeks.

Nobody is prepared for this in any country.  Nobody.

The CCSA clearly understands, that unlike some posters on here, the situation is out of control and the country may well be heading towards a catastrophe unless health is put before personal money making schemes.

Most new infections seem to be within work-places, either factories, construction sights or open markets.. not quite sure what she expects people to do.. stop breathing for 14 days?

Define "catastrophe".   Unless there is a dramatic increase in fatalities, Thailand's stats still seem relatively low for a major global pandemic.  Moving to a "proper" lockdown would cause catastrophic damage to the already damaged economy.  It's difficult to know what else they can do, except roll out the vaccine program a lot quicker and more effectively.

  • Popular Post

The knock-on effect of outbreaks at factories, markets, construction and food processing/distribution sites will impact everyone.

The regime has one task now and one task only: get everyone vaccinated NOW. You can go back to oppressing the serfs, and stealing from the trough, once everyone is vaccinated.

Anything else is unacceptable.

It's the VACCINE, stupid.

The numbers for today have jumped up quite a bit, and they have been responding to homes where they are finding seriously ill people who have not gone to the hospital. It appears that many may not be seeking treatment for the fear of being caged up for 2 weeks or so in a facility of some type.  Been watching Channel 32 news this morning and they have been highlighting that issue.  Not many on the lower run here who live life one day at a time to take care of their family's get any help from the government as they did not work in any official capacity or pay taxes and can not get registered for the handout programs.  The GF and I spent 2 hours last night delivering food stuffs as we do every week to the few families that we have adopted in the Soi's surrounding us.  Sad to see that even those who were scrimping by are now unable to even keep their meager food cart going.  The BMA spent yesterday spraying and disinfecting one Soi behind us and spraying the entrances to all the shops and houses.  Guess we must have had a case or so in that area, yet we have not seen or heard of them doing any testing here yet.  I know that many of the homeless who were here are now gone from the area and it makes me wonder where they went or where they have been taken to.

Well today's total is 5485! And this is largely powered by infections outside the prison system which means it is really out of control. So I guess we all can see the trajectory is leading this country toward a major crisis which will put a stop to the Phuket Sandbox and any hopes of opening to tourism in this calendar year.

I am completely puzzled here, one particular statistic in yesterdays Newsletter says there are no people with the Chinese virus in my province in Central Thailand, but my wife says completely different, she starts going on about the people in the next town and adjoining villages of people she has heard of who do have the virus. I do believe what my wife says, who is responsible for all the lies about my province and others in Thailand which says there is nobody with the Virus?

I'm sure there is no better place to be.

Five to ten expats have reportedly died from the virus in Thailand...so yes, I'd say it's been a safe place to be. I bet the 600,000 Americans who have died during the pandemic would agree.

Same in my province, Wife knows of 2 local (next village) cases where 2 families are now in home quarantine, one member sick enough to be taken to hospital.

Lots of advantages being rural, but quick vaccination is not one if them it would seem.

Don't need to define it at all, look it up in the dictionary. But just in case you are yet another denier todays figures released are a new high of 5484 and still low testing across the nation so that may indicate what a catastrophe we are already enduring, and no doubt will continue to  do so given the love of money over peoples lives in this country.

It is not falling apart...it is just the stupid rule to hospitalize all covid cases, including the asymptomatic. If UK was hospitalizing them, the health care would certainly fall apart there.

There is at this moment in time, a Rural Doctors Society who are making a big noise about the lack of vaccines ( B.P. this AM ), accusing the government of covering up the facts..

They are saying the Government has had to purchase 500,000 Doses of AZ from S. Korea to make up a short fall in promised Doses from SB, at a premium price.

These Doctors are also saying that the Gov,t has instructed that all vails of vaccine, which are designated a 10 Dose Vail, are now to give 12 shots per vial, thus reducing costs by 20 %, and presumably efficacy also by 20 %.

They'd 'flatten the curve' by allowing asymptomatic positives to quarantine in their homes.  It's not impossible as other countries do just that.
But?  Not Thailand!  The end result will be that they collapse their health care system and then blame the public.
This is just another checkmark in the list of inept responses to the Covid crisis.  The Thai government insists on doing things instead of following the lead of other countries, and they have botched it time and time again.  They'll botch this too.
