Jonathan Fairfield Posted June 6, 2021 Posted June 6, 2021 Local residents in Pattaya have expressed concern to Pattaya press about both an increase in homeless in the local area as well as concerns around Covid-19 in the homeless population. Pattaya is approaching two months as of June 10th, 2021, in which all entertainment venues and many other venues, like gyms, massage shops, and beauty clinics, have been ordered closed to help prevent Covid-19. Pattaya City relies on tourism, including domestic, for about 80% of their GDP, and entertainment-related venues, as well as tourist attractions, are the big economic driver for the local area. Popular Post PaulDee Posted June 6, 2021 Popular Post Posted June 6, 2021 With most hotels closed (therefore, empty) and hundreds of shops shut down, I would think some business owner or city official would work toward making that neglected space available to some of the thousands of homeless in and around Pattaya. Where's the selfless, creative, entrepreneurial spirit that Thai's take pride in? 2 2

Some way to go before it gets anywhere near as bad it is in some U.S. cities. If the world's wealthiest country cannot get to grips with the problem who can? 1
Popular Post Isaan sailor Posted June 6, 2021 Popular Post Posted June 6, 2021 Although tragic for those affected, this kind of news could convince money managers to remove Thailand from their Emerging Markets listing. Thailand does not have a fast growing economy, nor does it have rising exports. Too much foreign investment money gets plowed into Thailand because if this erroneous listing. This in turn keeps the Baht high. 3 1

ThaIrish Sean Posted June 6, 2021 Posted June 6, 2021 Many rich Thai landlords who refused to lower their rent to farrang now have empty properties. They should be forced to open them for these poor unfortunate people. Yet again we see the chasm between the rich and the poor. 1 1
Popular Post Mason45 Posted June 6, 2021 Popular Post Posted June 6, 2021 This problem has been in Pattaya for years, I must admit it was never as bad as it is now. The main problem is that many people from up north east shouldn't be living in Pattaya in the first place. Ok some do ok but the majority have very few skills except farming and quite a few go to Pattaya with illegal intententions. We have to do 90 day reports, maybe Thais should have to do the same thing when they jump provinces. By the way my wife of 20 years is from Korat, of course I met her in a Beach Road bar and she totally agrees with me. Stay safe all as Uncle Tu will come to the rescue. 1 2

rcuthbert Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 Helping the poor during a socioeconomic crisis can create a reliable voting block. Perhaps Thai politicians were not taught to think in the abstract?
