The chief of the Royal Thai police has sent a check for 100,000 baht to the noodle vendor shot in Soi Bangla, Patong, Phuket by a policeman.

Corporal Pornthep Charnnarong, 25, who did not know the victim prior to the shooting, admitted that he was drunk.

He has been charged with attempted murder, weapons offences and temporarily removed from the service.

The victim was 26 year old Arun Thongplap who has now left Vachira Hospital and is recuperating at home, reported Daily News.

He is undergoing continued physiotherapy for spinal injuries sustained in the shooting.

He was visited by Lt-Gen Kitrat Panpetch of Region 8 who presented the check to Arun in his bed.

Kitrat promised that the suspect in the case would receive no favors, was being held without bail and that the police only cared for the well-being of the victim in this case.

The check was a nice big one for the cameras and bore the name of RTP chief Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk stating that it was help for Mr Arun.

I think they missed a couple of zeros on that cheque. Should've been 10,000,000! 100K is a joke.

Prawit and Prayut should donate a watch apiece.

$3200 for a spinal injury, caused by a drunk cop.

Oops. Did not mean to shoot you. I do not know what came over me. But, it is nice to know I truly am above the law, and that we have the power to pay you off, for 1% of what we should have given you, and you can't and won't say anything.

Well, we can say something. This stinks. And most of you guys are a boil on the face of the nation.

The expression on the poor man's face says everything..

Indeed, and the RTP presenting looks like he's smiling away for the photo op. Pretty sickening - both photo and cheque amount.

Pathetic thats what it is, 100.000 baht, peanuts, poor man is paralyzed for life.

No amount of money could ever compensate him for what he will have to endure for the rest of his life.

<deleted> police only care my backside, if they genuinely cared the cheque would have been at least 10 million.

Let's hope that the 100,000Bht cheque from the snr. cop doesn't affect other compensation/medical costs support the unfortunate young man is due.

Hope he recovers back to good health and able to work and support his young family.

You do not seem to understand, he will never recover, he is the same as me, knackered for the rest of his life.

Police generosity at its finest. The RTP chief unselfishly and with the purest of motives, donates a full 1% of the brown envelope money he took in yesterday. The people applaud his kindness and sing his praises.

Probably had to set up an extra  roadside  check for a few  hours  one afternoon to get that.

The story is about the young man who was shot by a rogue cop. You say he'll never recover;  the reality is that you or me, or don't know yet ('don't understand' in your words) what the future will bring and I hope he has good medical attention, good support and good luck which can bring solid improvements to his health and his overall situation.

However it does seem that he'll have severe problems into the future.

With all respect, the story is not about you.

Some food for thought. On this morning's walk I discussed this case with my Thai wife. Her observation was why police force or even government responsible. It was an off duty policeman  responsible. This made me ponder. Maybe my wife correct (again).  The gun is not police issue. Policeman buys himself. I know this as when my nephew in law joined the police he could not afford the gun and I paid for it.

Perhaps the police force have a moral obligation to compensate, sort of shamed into it. I see government compensation being the way but the fellow not likely on the Social Security scheme that would pay unemployment benefit. Wife tells me there might be a disability pension of only 1,000 baht a month.

Life is tough in Thailand, and also cheap :(
