The Royal College of Physicians of Thailand (RCPT) has proposed a list of six prerequisites, to be implemented by the government before it finally decides to reopen Thailand to foreign arrivals, currently planned for October.

 

In a statement, posted on its Facebook page today (Monday), the RCPT expressed concern over the government’s policy to reopen to foreign visitors in 120 days, at a time when new COVID-19 infections are not slowing, noting that such a policy could seriously hamper the health system, if there is an fourth outbreak of COVID-19 caused by a virus variant which is more serious, spreads faster and does not respond to current vaccines.

 

One of the prerequisites calls for the government to define clear and effective measures to be put into practice to control and monitor infections and to make sure that all stakeholders will cooperate fully to improve the situation, which will build confidence among the public and tourists alike.

What's worrying for Thailand is they now have 1436 people in serious condition. That's at least another 6 weeks of 30 a day deaths if they all cop it without even adding any more criticals.

 

Think it safe to say Thailand will be posting daily deaths of 25-30 for well over the next 120 days , unless something seriously changes in reporting or the vaccine roll out.

I take it all the members of RCPT have jobs. Perhaps they would like to contribute some of their salaries to help the millions out of work following the collapse of Thailand's tourism industry. No?

Yes.  They should announce the cancellation of that holiday now.  Especially if they are considering opening bars, clubs and entertainment venues.

With the highly contagious Delta variant spreading, it could all lead to a big time bomb.

umm what to say...eu uk usa are all weeks away from opening up and clearing their economies.not so here obviously and from what ive read and im hearing the china vacc gives low cover less than 50% ,people i know in hk wont use it,theyre scared of it.the drs here also state they think vaccs may not work on mutations ,i think that seems to indicate a lack of confidence in china vacc i could be mistaken but most people ive spoken with dont want it.the az pfizer and moderna shots seem to offer a lot more cover on new  and old strains.most importantly theres not enough vaccs and for us its complicated to get it.its a muddle of epic proportions.id like to get out shortly  but even thats not straightforward as the info on that changes so fast.i wanna go to southern europe,but what do we need to get there.dancng with the devil here,its all done on apps and phone computers,the stuff works sometimes but i m not very good at it and i dont like being trakked a la 1984.i just wanna walk in a place get a shot,pay for it,i was signed up with a private hospital but the govt stopped that way out,why thats insane?people can get cover ,that helps the overall situation and the individual,makes no sense what so ever,i just want the paper or cert so i can fly and have some type of normality in my life.

Just another example of "the white elephant in the room". What does it matter what "effective and clear" measures you put in place when you are so far behind in the vaccine rollout. Focus should be  on procuring covid vaccines. I was at Jomtien Beach last Sunday and it was packed with Thais piled on each other, trying to escape the heat in the shaded areas. This idea of enforcing rules to control spread of infections is neither a practical nor workable solution. IMHO, vaccinne is the only way out.

Since no one in Government seems concerned about 60+ deaths daily on the roads, I don’t think they will worry about 30+ extra until it starts to affect hiso families, most of whom will already have been vaccinated. While it’s only peasants, more important to get the money rolling back into the pockets.

Fully agree another long holiday could be a disaster after surge of infections that now occurring after Songkran . Surely better to expedite vaccine programme as it appears vaccines presently give good protection and then open up cautiously 

Another prerequisite, proposed by the RCPT, is for the government to enforce the laws strictly, concerning disease control, illegal border crossings, illegal gambling, large gatherings and travel by infected or high-risk people.

 

The RCPT said that the government must procure sufficient, effective vaccines, to inoculate all people in Thailand.

 

Ok, so zero for two so far.

As long as they have the means to maintain a plethora of clergy and to build more and more temples, there is nothing to worry about.

I estimate Thailand has a little under 500k deaths per year. Are we sure these people were not very elderly and going to die soon anyways from natural causes? 30 deaths a day is only 10k/year, a tiny fraction of all deaths.

So  what is it you re saying here, Covid is a benefit and doing the job a vet might normally do?

Put physicians on the restricted list, no income allowed, and see if that changes their tune.

Yes... can they infect others ? No - what is the issue here? Pure ignorance on the medical assurance that the vaccine is work.

Infection will slow when the vaccine vaccination program is in full swing. That is Thai concern and has nothing to do with fully vaccinated tourists arriving in Thailand.

 

the whole article does not make sense.

this person is getting big salary to say something.. I guess he needs to justify his salary on few tidbit  medical knowledge about the world trend on the progress of the vaccination effort in other countries.  It is like the  Ostrich to sink its head in the sand to avoid listening

They should act and listen This virus is not going away . it will keep mutating and even those who were lucky enough to get vaccine will be at risk .

maybe you should be directing that point straight at the current government who have done little to help the Thai people these last 18 months

Would you rather have no job but be safe or dead!

   Where were they 6 months ago?  They should have been shouting then to get the vaccines ordered at that time and get the country vaccinated quickly.

I think we all know why the vaccines were not ordered from outside Thailand. Someone wanted to line their pockets with local production.

The Thai government got complacent when it was viewing the rate of infection here against what was happening in other countries. Allowing travel during Songkhran kick-started the numbers.

Permit me to doubt the military leaders here would even understand the concept of mutation, they think in fixed patterns.

Back in Britain, Boris has all but ruled out overseas travel this summer. Meanwhile, SAGE is forecasting a nasty fourth wave in the winter, so travel restrictions will probably get even tighter. There's no reason to believe that Europe and America will be much different. China has locked itself down and isn't about to let its people travel anytime soon, India and Malaysia will still be picking up the pieces after their current waves, Japan and South Korea will play things even more cautiously that the UK and Europe. So where are all these tourist they want to attract going to come from? They'd be better off forgetting about anything other than domestic tourism for the next year and getting the current outbreak under control and the population properly vaccinated.

 

And that makes for an interesting prediction. Since it seems that Covid is going to "simply" become another part of the annual winter flu cycle (although a much more dangerous and contagious part, at least for the elderly and sick), it seems likely that winter travel restrictions may become a part of life. Since this is Thailand's main money-earning time for foreign tourism, perhaps they should learn to embrace a future where the "high season" (such as it is, given the rainy season) starts in May and ends in October, and there will be few foreign visitors during the bleak winter months of the northern hemisphere.
