Fisheries Department bans 13 alien aquatic species in Thailand

Thailand’s Fisheries Department has decided to ban the breeding and farming of 13 alien aquatic species, defined as non-indigenous species introduced by human activities, which are deemed to be a threat to native aquatic species and the local ecological system.

 

Alien aquatic species have had extensive impacts on native species, said Mr. Chalermchai Suwanrat, deputy director-general of the Fisheries Department, citing the case of the Blackchin tilapia (Sarotherodon melanotheron), which slipped into some shrimp farms three years ago, causing extensive damage to the farms and native species.

 

As a result, he said that the department issued a ministerial announcement banning the import, export, transit or farming of Blackchin tilapia, Mayan cichlid (Mayaheros urophthalmus) and Zebra cichlid (Maylandia estherae), effective as of March 19th, 2018, adding that farmers were told to kill the three species and turn them into organic fertilizer.

Could be quite a pong outside government offices if the latter part of this statement is enacted  "Farmers are advised to inform their provincial fisheries office if they still have any of the species in their possession or to deliver them to their local fisheries officials"

So long as they are Thai ones and not an alien specie I guess they will allowed,

A very odd list, 2 very common aquarium species which are too small to be edible, not sure wh would be mad enough even in Thailand to farm Tiger fish, Rainbow Trout and Sea trout would not thrive in Thai conditions, and the worlds most dangerous octopus. Who is farming that?

I think it would be fair to let the remaining aquatic alien species stay. Providing they can show funds of 800K in a thai bank account or 400K if married to a local species, (not required for female aliens) and perhaps a letter of guarantee from their owner. and a covid insurance. + 2 passport photos.

A shellfish thing to do that  .. Bad , bad fish slipping in there ..

they must've scaled the fence or something ..

Anyone remember the name of the gogo bar ground floor, left hand side Nana plaza, that had the girls swimming in the fish tanks on the back wall inside. 

Always interesting when you went for a pee-pee, in that bar. !!!!!!!!!!!!!LOL

That's the one where the girls were naked and use to dive down for coins thrown in ?  As you say those were the days and yet another aquatic specie now not allowed in Thailand. Off topic but my favourite 20 years ago was the small bar, 3rd floor called the Dog's Breath, remember that one ? no aquatic performers but defiantly some of us aliens were entertained to a level unparralled 555

Rainbow trout are farmed up North around Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai - sold in Royal Project shops. I wonder if they will stop.....
