Nine million register for Moderna at private hospitals - 3,300 baht is still a lot for Thai people

I am horrified to read how many people are still desperate to get a vaccination

For one time I am blessed to be old (more than 75 years) because I could get at Bang Sue Grand Station without pre-registration a free AstraZeneca jab (just walk-in at Gate 1 and show passport) / staff was very kind and helpful in English / Thailand at its best.

National News Bureau Of Thailand (prd.go.th)

I'm glad for you, priorities (due to your age in the case) need to be respected.  Hopefully it'll apply to more of us soon.

9 million people registering/expressing interest does not mean 9M followed through with payment because many people (probably around half) surely decided not to follow thru with payment or tried to pay but couldn't.

For example the wife and I registered for Moderna jabs with the Thonburi Hospital Group (THG) in early June when THG opened registration....it was open for a week or so...went over a million registrations and then they closed further registrations as interest was far exceeding the number of doses THG would be allowed to order.   But it wasn't until 1 July when THG (along with most other hospitals offering Moderna jabs) actually started accepting jab "payment" which would lock-in Moderna jabs.   Now a person who had registered before (i.e., shown interest) would need to pay to lock-in the jabs.   Until payment is made a person is not locked-in to getting jabs.   But by 1 July the wife and I had got our first free AstraZeneca jab.....2nd jab scheduled for late September.....we decided waiting for Moderna in late 2021 was too long to wait and AstraZeneca is a good vaccine.   So, when THG opened up for Moderna jab payment on 1 July the wife and I didn't followed thru with payment which would reserve Moderna jabs for us.   THG accepted payment for jabs for approx two days before shutting down for further payments...expect they reached their limit of the doses they would be allowed to order.

What I'm saying is although there  is tremendous interest in getting Moderna a lot of people surely didn't follow thru with payment because they decided against it when payment time came OR were unable to pay although tried to.

The other issue will be whether any hospitals released their payment system for use before they knew how many of the initial 5 million they would be allocated.  Is it the case that Bumungrad didn't allow booking / payment until they were certain?  Or maybe the spiralling numbers of cases in the last week have resulted in a more widespread panic with # times more people trying to register.

Time will tell I guess, when we start to get 'Sorry we were over-subscribed.  We will refund your account within the next 3 years'.  I got booked at Medpark having pre-registered in June.  Unlike Bumungrad however, they DID send an email to register and pay with link which worked first time.

Can any member:

- Please share a list of the hospitals (nationwide, especially Chiang Mai) who are taking these registrations?

- And did the folks registering have to pay the fees on the spot?

Thanks.

A list of hospitals taking registrations would not help at all.  Registrations are closing in hours to minutes of starting.

Thonburi Healthcare Group was taking registrations first.  Then a week or two later sent messages asking you to pay a ฿2,400 deposit.  I'm sure they had far more register than actually paid the deposit.

Bangkok hospital in Ratchaburi opened a walk in only registration last Saturday.  The hospital called us at home about 8:00am.  They stopped taking registrations around 10:00am.  You had to pay ฿3,300 for this one.

I expect each hospital knew what its allotment would be based negotiations between members of the private hospitals group and the govt GPO.  That is, Thonburi Hospital Group you get 800K, Bumrungrad you get 50K, Hospital Group XYZ you get 250K, etc...etc...etc.  And all of this added up to 5 million total doses in the procurement contract between GPO and Moderna which is suppose to final/be signed in early August the last I heard.

I sure hope in this contract they are including "options" where the GPO can buy X-amount more doses above and beyond the basic order of 5M doses..   Like the basic order is for 5M doses with options to say buy more doses in certain size chunks....like buying another 500K doses with delivery with X-months at a certain price,  buying 1M more doses at a certain price, etc.  And being able to exercise these options multiple times.   The GPO would not be contractually obligated to exercise these options but would be available if wanting to buy more than the 5M basic order.

Including options in procurement contracts is quite common....sure hope the govt GPO had the good sense to include some unless for political reasons the govt don't want to arrange the buying of more than 5M Moderna doses in order to keep herding people towards the govt's preferred vaccine of AstraZeneca and other vaccines the govt is "willingly" buying and have in-hard right now.

Herding people towards vaccines the govt currently has in-hand means people will get vaccinated "now" which will help beat down the pandemic "now" versus having many people waiting for another vaccine(s) to arrive later this year.

Maybe your friend click on the booster  (4 person 1 dose)!
As 3'300 for 2 dose is the normal price. I don't think they do separate price in that case (even they do on many other things).

I think you are right. The screencap he sent me was in Thai and now that I've registered myself I can see that he only registered for 2 people (4 doses). I've sent him the bad news (that he will have to amend his booking and pay some more money).

They gave me the option to pay now or later. I chose to pay half now.

thanks for the infos. my thai wife booked moderna on the thai website. she paid 3'300 thb, same as I paid!

did your friend made a screenshot of the booking? did you see it?

The screenshot he sent me originally was in Thai so I couldn't tell what he'd done (as far as registering) but I saw a "2" in one field and a "4" in another and he said it was only 6,600 total.

But now that I've registered myself and have seen the English version of the screen, I can see that he only registered 2 people (4 doses). I've sent him a message so that he can amend his booking (and pay some more).

Can confirm, 3k baht is indeed about 10 days of work, or 1/3 a monthly salary of many Thais. Here in our moo ban, 9k a month is what a primary school teacher makes. And at one of my previous schools, that's what the front office secretary made. That's the main reason for so much debt. There's all these things they want, that the media constantly blasts to them they should have, phones, cosmetics, these damn coffee machines I'm skipping past before every YouTube video, yet they simply don't have the salary for it.

3k is a lot for the foreign teaching experts. I used to be one.

I just managed to register at KSBR and sent the payment this morning. 3,300 baht for 2 doses of Moderna.

A Thai friend sent me the link after he registered. 4 people, 2 doses each. 6,600 baht.

So they are charging foreigners double. They know you are a foreigner when you register and use a passport number instead of a Thai ID number.

Their payment system is kind of weird though. You have to make a bank transfer, then attach a .jpg photo of the confirmed payment to the (online) invoice.

https://www.ksbrhospital.com/WebService/KASEMRAD_Vac_Survey?ui=EN

You have to wait for a minute (or 5) before it directs you to the registration screen. Click "English" in the top-right corner.

Note there are 14 different hospitals to chose from (as to where you want to get jabbed). Closest to Pattaya though is the one in Chachoengsao. Under "City" they don't list Pattaya, so you have to select Chon Buri, then Bang Lamung, then Nong Prue (or Na Kluea or Huay Yai).

Under amount, type in "1" if you are just registering for a single person (1 person = 2 doses).

Check the box at the bottom and then submit it. There will be a long pause and you may have to do it a couple times (in the event it "times out" or gives you an error screen).
Took me a couple tries before giving me the message about payment and the payment screen. (It's a Krung Thai bank account.)

Then you go to your bank/atm/whatever and make the payment, then make a photo of the payment slip (or take a screen cap and crop out everything except the bank payment details) and attach that at the bottom of the payment screen.

No idea of how long it will take until the payment is confirmed. My understanding is that they won't start jabbing people until October.

Thanks for your mails.

I'm lost in regard to 'KSBR'.

From what I can find it's a 'syndicate' of 14 hospitals but I can't find a full list.

Can you please share a link to the hospitals list.

Thanks.

BNH is NOT taking registration or money until they actually get the vaccines. I got an email from them.

Are you a registered patient at BNH? How did they e-mail you regarding the vaccines? BNH is the hospital I go to and where my doctors are at, and the only thing I received was on the Line App from them about two months ago when they asked about interest in getting vaccinated.  Just curious.

Yes I am a registered patient.  I have gotten on the moderna and az list with them.  I also send emails asking for updates.

I have had surgery there so that may make it to a more thorough list not sure this was the first email got then got an email from them about a means to combat ED LOL

The bottom line is that they have nothing and the impression that I get is that they rely on the govt to give them some of the shipments lol.

They seem to not be holding their breathe waiting for anything.

I will be online tomorrow at 9 like everyone else flooding the google form app

Checked with BNH just a few ago, and they are still taking people for the Astrzaenica vaccine and sinovac, for a total of just 160 people each day but are filling up fast for July, as the alternative vaccines are not on the horizon yet.  They did indicate they would be in contact when they come available.

Here was what I received via. e-mail

Samitivej has organized a race for its patients at 10.00 am tomorrow morning.  Pay in advance 1,650 a shot and non transferable. I got a message two weeks ago saying they had already reserved vaccine for me and would be in touch to ask how many I wanted.  Now it seems they have not reserved anything but invite me to compete in a bunfight tomorrow morning.  The website says you can go to the Sukhumvit and Srinakarin hospitasl to book but the call centre says you can only do it online.  No doubt there be traffic jams around the hospitals and a lot of angry people.  I am sure they have allocated most of the vaccines internally.

Getting fed up with this BS.

Furthermore it is a national disgrace that anyone has to pay for a vaccine at all and that those that can't afford it will be excluded.

Well, if you want Moderna you must pay.  But the govt is providing free jabs of Sinovac and AstraZeneca vaccines.

Paying in advance for a vaccine that may or may not be delivered this year? Bizarre. Plus it's not like these big hospital groups don't have any money. One of them reported net profit last year of THB 1.45 billion and paid decent dividends; another THB 7.2 billion (that's USD 230 million). Not too shabby. Their Q121 performance is down a bit but still very healthy. Only Thonburi isn't doing so well, having lost over THB 200 million just this quarter (according to SET company data).

I've also registered and pre-paid for Moderna here in Phuket, both doses, which I also intend to have whenever they are available.

IMHO you were fortunate to successfully register and be allocated Moderna. The Phuket Bangkok Hospital website went down seconds after 09:00 hrs after opening for registrations. After reopening a couple of minutes or so after 10:30 am it's allocation was full prior to 10:45 am when it was announced allocations all booked. During the brief time it was open the site was slow and multiple refresh clicks need to make progress.

According to the press over 67,000 people attempted to register for Moderna in this short timeframe and the rumour mill suggests the Hospital had an allocation of less than 5,000 doses.

Hopefully there will be other opportunities soon and the "powers that be" don't wait months to attempt to order more than just 5-10 million Moderna jabs.

Sorry, I know it's getting a bit boring...but this is my post to remind the denizens of the land of dillydallying with demimondaine that the impoverished Socialist country to your East, the one that ranks below 150 in most indices, the one that has to borrow pretty much everything just to survive and receives very little in return from the expatriates who live there...

...provided FREE vaccines for ALL EXPATRIATES WITHOUT PREJUDICE as if they were actual citizens of Lao PDR. The only reason you wouldn't be vaccinated in Laos right now is because you don't want to be.

So as you reflect upon the incompetence of Prayut and the contempt with which you're held by the people you're handsomely paying for the privilege of becoming walking ATMs for, you might consider that there are actually countries in the region who don't treat Expats like this.

Samitivej supposedly opened for re-registration by pre-registered patients today at 10.00 am but the website was unresponsive via phone and 4 different PC browsers from 9.30.  About 10.15 a message popped up saying trying again at 11.00.

Wasn't expecting much anyway on the assumption that all or most were divvied up for super wealthy and connected persons in advance and they thought they ought to put on an internet pantomime for show.  No one can know how many bookings came through the internet.  It will not be open to audit.

I got supposedly to the front of the Samitivej queue half a dozen times. I input my phone number to request an OTP and immediately a new screen pops up each time telling me I am again at the back of the queue with a wait of over an hour.

The UK has ordered 500m does of vaccine, yet we have a population of 60m.

Surely in any other area of business there are laws against hoarding? Especially during a pandemic.

How can some countries order so many even 3 or 4x the actual quantity that they have publicly stated they actually require!? Thus leaving more susceptible people and countries clambering for shots.

What i like to see during a global pandemic is countries pulling together, even the vaccine producers perhaps limiting their profit in these type of times to ensure a good roll out to the people that need it, old and also people that are more susceptible to these types of virus.

Astra have changed the name of their covid vaccine to a more generic name,  Vaxzevria (previously COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca ) which suggests that its going to get used for other things other than covid( Basically at some stage they will need to offload these vaccines)

The whole thing unsurprisingly has turned into a money grabbing experiment, with 3rd world countries leading the way by charging their already poor citizens and of course the highest bidders get what they want, yet the people that might actually require it could miss out due to be a low earner!
