Health officials in Thailand reported more than 9,500 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday (July 11), setting a record for a fifth successive day, as the reality of 10,000 daily new cases gets ever closer.

 

Health officials reported a total of 9,539 cases, with 86 deaths. 103 cases were found in prisons.

 

The new cases bring the total case tally to 336,371, with nearly 90 percent of the total infections being detected since the third wave of outbreak began in early April. 

 

The number of daily new infections have now been above 9,000 for three straight days.

 

Last Wednesday, the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) warned that new cases could surge to 10,000 per day over the next week.

 

On Friday, the CCSA announced a host of new restrictions for Bangkok and neighbouring provinces. 

 

On Saturday, the details of the restrictions were published in the Royal Gazette, confirming them to law.

Thailand set a record single-day high for new COVID cases for the fifth consecutive day with the 9,539 cases reported on Sunday, while also adding 86 new COVID deaths, the country’s second highest tally of the pandemic.

 

Sunday’s results, with the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus spreading throughout Thailand, brought the country ever closer to predictions that it will soon surpass 10,000 new COVID cases and 100 COVID deaths per day.

 

The newly reported COVID cases – 9,436 among the general population and 103 among prisoners – came the day before the Thai government’s imposition Monday of a nightly curfew and the closure of some businesses in Bangkok and nine other provinces with high COVID case tolls.

 

Sunday’s new case count also means Thailand’s tally of daily COVID cases has more than doubled during the past two weeks from levels in the mid 4,000s in late June. Just in the past five days, the country set new COVID case records daily with tallies of starting July 7 of 6,519, 7,058, 9,276, 9,326 and finally today’s 9,539 new cases.

 

The 86 new COVID deaths reported Sunday was exceeded only by the 91 new COVID deaths the day before. Since the start of the pandemic, Thailand has now recorded 336,371 total COVID cases and 2,711 deaths, although some Thai doctors say the real figures, especially for cases, are likely much higher.

 

Because of the rapid rise in new COVID cases in Thailand, the country as of Saturday was already reporting record levels of COVID cases hospitalized (80,289), the share of those in critical condition (2,738), and the share of those requiring ventilators to breathe (717). Those numbers are likely to go even higher when updated later today.

Chonburi Public Health Office has just announced they have 381 new cases and five more deaths. Most new cases are in Chonburi City (144), Bang Lamung/Pattaya (42), and Si Racha (73). The total cases so far is now 11,632 with 4,009 remaining in care #Thailand

9,500 is nowhere near the real number...even every otherwise uninterested Thai I know is aware that the real number is much higher.

 

On a side noted I saw today a video post on Facebook of a large gym in Pattaya...the gym was packed and not a single person was wearing a mask. Wonder if steroids protects from Covid?

 

We only need to look to Indonesia to see what happens next for Thailand.

I can’t see the restrictions coming in to effect on Monday having any impact on these numbers. Why wait till Monday giving people the opportunity to move out to the provinces where facilities and resources to deal with large local outbreaks will be very limited.

Not a hope in hell that those Pattaya numbers are anywhere close to reality. I think Pattaya is the one place where you can safely assume the real numbers are at least 10X higher than what is reported.

The government needs to give some figures on those health workers that are falling victim to covid, seriously ill, or death despite being fully vaccinated, a very sad case here of a healthy nurse dying from covid despite having both doses of the Chinese fluid.

Third consecutive day of 9,000+ officially reported new cases... 9,000+ is Thailand's new COVID normal... maybe at least until tomorrow or the next day.

 

Plus, new cases at 9,539 more than double the day's number of reported recoveries at 4,053, meaning the health care system gets more overburdened and ever closer to breaking.

All this, and as far as I know they still haven't ordered enough quality vaccines to vaccinate everyone here ... just 5 million here, and 10 million there ... mere dribs and drabs. (Yes I know once ordered we'll have to wait, but the wait time doesn't start until all the orders are placed.)

 

In short: I cannot see a game plan by the powers that be that actually has an end point. (Yes, the locally produced vax MAY save the day ... but there are too many questions about its capacity.)

I totally agree. I have heard many stories of people scrambling to get out of red zone areas before curfew takes place. It's like the gang informant on the street telling the drug dealer...the cops are coming.

Don't you mean the new flatline using the old flatline strategy to contain the escalating covid numbers being reported.They have also stop the exponential growth of the reported numbers.Testing numbers on world in data haven't been updated since June 19th.Still that "old fish sauce" smell still lingers longer in Thailand.

Last week saw 43,765 confirmed infections. This week at this rate maybe 60-70K maybe more. Please anyone say this is not an exponetial increase. Possible 50% increase over a 7 day peiod. The psuedo lockdown will do nothing other than push it out to the provinces.

Free food in the quarantine facilities as they have run out of money and it's the only way to receive gov assistance.

Not a safe environment?  It's a deathtrap.

Steroids, probably not, but staying fit and healthy most definitely will provide protection from the effects of covid.   The WHO specifically state that face masks should NOT be worn whilst exercising.

It is safe to say at this point, Covid is totally out of control. This completely got away from the goons. So much could have and should have been done to prevent this fiasco from happening. 

 

One can only hope the goombahs are eventually held responsible for this tragedy. Prison? Exile? 

 

Will the investigators be able to recover the stolen fortunes? 

 

I think Prayuth should consider Montenegro for exile. He can take Anutin with him. Phiphat should be sent to Burundi.

So people  can get home. Thankfully not everyone in the government is as authoritarian as you. Easier to make the rules from your keyboard though.
