With funding from the European Union (EU) and new strategies, Thailand hopes toget infections and mortality rates from the coronavirus down in the next couple of months.

To this end, Thailand is negotiating to join the Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) scheme, according to Dr Nakorn Premsri, the director of the National Vaccine Institute, who explained that this is to manage risks in 2022 and not a “back and forth” decision as critics have said. “The decision is part of the government’s risk management plan to prepare for the changing situation due mainly to virus mutations,” he said.

“Not all ASEAN countries get free vaccines. We’re an upper middle income country and we have to pay for it. We didn’t want to join at first because we didn’t know when we’d get the vaccines. But now that the producers have already supplied sufficient vaccines to the rich countries and there have also been donations, the situation has changed,” he said.

A bad headline.

In reality, Thailand has only applied to join Covax. They haven't signed up yet.

All things that should have been done a year ago. Now the COVID is several steps ahead and will not be caught for a considerable amount of time. The Thai people will suffer from this incompetency and greed. A lack of real democracy and press freedom are a major cause of this  fiasco..

I am happy that Thailand is sure that now the vaccines are coming in time.. These months enough jabs for every one..They doubted that Covax would deliver in time. Now they organised it by themselves it is much better..and cheaper??

The Government never had a risk management plan for Covid.

They just bumbled along in ignorance and denial, until basically, they were forced into this Covax project as a possible get out of Jail card.

BTW, I love the design on both the Vaccine Vials in the photo.

2 different companies, and the design is exactly the same

What are the chances of that happening.

For reference - Global Citizen March 10th 2021:-

"Cambodia has become the first country in the Western Pacific to receive COVID-19 vaccines from the COVAX Facility.

"The arrival of 324,000 AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines on March 2 marks the first batch of a total of 7 million doses that the country is set to receive"

Negotiating to join Covax? Well that’s pretty special.  Right now, Thailand belongs to that elite group of Covax abstainers:  North Korea, Madagascar, Tanzania, Eritrea and Burundi.  Better late than never.

This contradicts the headline. Has Thailand joined or is it still negotiating to do so?

Thailand Shifts Strategies, Joins COVAX

It hasn't joined COVAX yet.

Accurate headline:  Thailand shifts strategies, plans to join COVAX.

I wasn't that long ago certain "leaders" were telling the public that all sorts of vaccines were coming, then when enquiring journalist dug a little deeper you find that contract hadn't been signed, FDA was holding up paperwork, yada yada yada.

So, the day that Thailand becomes part of COVAX is the day that the media can accurately publish:
"Thailand Joins COVAX."
Until then it's speculation.

Unfortunately Covax is planning on buying millons of Sinovac and Sinopharm.

Sinovac is practically useless against COVID-19.

Sinopharm study last week:

"BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — A new study suggests that a Sinopharm vaccine offers poor protection from COVID-19 among the elderly, raising questions for dozens of countries that have given the Chinese company’s shots to their most vulnerable populations."

So looks like Thailand as usual is blowing chunks on the vaccine front:

He's the same who keeps mentioning how great Sinovac is against the Alpha variant (original) even though were battling the Delta variant.

Nice suite though.

The COVAX train has already left the station for middle income countries like Thailand. COVAX has finished supplying the self financiang participants and considers they have now had enought time to order vaccines for themselves.  Now they are focusing urgently on supply countries that can't afford to order anything for themselves.  Sorry Thailand but I suspect they already know this and the announcement is just damage limitation, banking on the fact that most Thais can't read English and don't have a clue what is going on beyond the end of their noses.

Like there master nogotiaters.

Like negotiating for 5 million doses of Moderna.

They need 200 million, any extra give it to your neighbors.  Do something nice for once.

Months and months of waisted time and lives.

There not even paying for it.

in view of this self-critic, would lese majeste charges be dropped against the opposition leader for stating

very obvious to everybody statement, that the government made mistake not securing vax from many

I find it interesting.  Even here on this forum we need to attribute statements we make regarding Covid.  True attribution means linking to studies published in known and respected medical journals.
In the Bloomberg article there is zero attribution, just statements.  This is journalism posing as science.  Personally, I want to read the study.

In addition:
"The study by two Hungarian researchers was posted online this week but not yet reviewed by other scientists.
Three outside experts said they had no problems with the methodology of the study of the vaccine developed by Sinopharm’s Beijing Institute of Biological Products."  <---- Comedy posing as science

It's not peer reviewed - but- three unnamed, anonymous "experts" said it's just hunky dory.  <---- Comedy posing as science

Vaccines have become Geo-political cannon-fodder.  That imho is unconscionable and there is no place in a civilized world for this nonsense, yet here it is in its fully disgusting glory.

Like something right out of Orwell's 1984 updated for 2021.

Looks as though the PTB plan to create a martyr while the social magma flows upwards and is felt as increasingly sever tremors nationwide, especially as the old article states a total of 18K+ cases when daily cases are now 15k+ and small and medium business are again the targets of shut downs and deemed unessential.

Publicly repent and we'll take the rat-cage off of your face.

Hummm.  I've read that story and know how it ends.

Regarding the Hungary study is important because so little data and transparency by both Sinovac and Sinopharm.

The study is particularly important, as only limited information is available on the effectiveness of the inactivated virus contained in the Sinopharm vaccine, especially in the elderly, despite the fact that it is approved in more than 50 countries.

People want the facts not just what China and Thailand beaurcats tell them.
