Wearing a mask forever ? So great ! World has never been so clean ! I love the new normal !

I choose to mask up when hitting the real world. Haven't caught a cold since doing it. For me that's a big thing, because while I don't get sick often, when it happens. I pull out my will to update it. Wearing a mask has been beneficial in that regard. If I am in open (non-polluted) air, I would prefer not to. Being on public transit or in a crowded area, my preference goes out the window and the mask comes on.

While in Japan years ago, I noticed some people on the trains wearing masks.

A common courtesy when they had a cold.

Believe or not, I saw this happen at a Greek sandwich shop in Austin, TX once, while waiting to place my order - they had the best sandwiches - or so I thought. I did decide to leave without placing my order on that particular occasion, though. 

 

As someone who traveled for a living and ate out daily, I've often wondered what things might have ended up in my food...never mind, it's probably better not to know.

If masks are forever, that means the human immune system does not work. The virus will weaken overtime and become seasonal. That's it.

The virus does not weaken over time, SARS-CoV-2 will evolve, it will mutate, existing variants do not get weaker over time, they either continue to spread moving from host to host or the don’t move from host to host and die out, or, they evolve and mutate into weaker variants (more commonly) or more serious variants. 

 

But, what the virus does not do is get ‘weaker over time’.... we may develop immunity to a virus such that its impact over time is reduced.

 

H1N1 influenza was first identified with the 1918 outbreak, there was another deadly outbreak in 2008 - this variant of influenza did not weaken over 90 years, neither will SARS-CoV-2 Variant 1.617.2, it will continue to spread and evolve, we need to be able to evolve with it, either with continued development of our natural immunity with regular exposure or programmed immunity from vaccines. 

 

Or we need to develop effective medicine which immediately and effectively treats Covid-19 such that its no longer a threat.

Been coming to Thailand  since April of 2000 and when Asia was having outbreaks of Avian/Swine flu as soon as  we hit Narita  from the USA we donned masks. Everyone in the airport had them on while waaiting for  their planes.  Same with Malaysia, Vietnam ,Singapore ect.  You say flimsy surgical masks offfer no protection and you claim  to be a nurse.  They are worn in surgery to protect the patitent from germs/coughfing spreading into their open wounds as well as protecting Dr's 

/nurses from contaminated/infected blood splatter. Also I have been in BKK when the  polution level was high, could not go outside with out lungs being iiritated if not masking up (most  people) That's why it's said that Asians are used to wearing masks and don't make a big fuss about it as it's common to be seen wearing one. Maybe up in the boonies they don't because how many maybe infected farangs are touring there? I am sure they wear  in Chiang Mai diuring burning season.

And again, the most important protective effect of masks is protecting others against the wearer. Surgical masks weren't created to protect surgeons and nurses from being infected but rather to protect the person being operated on.

Clearly, nobody wears mask outside cities and Thai are not big time mask wearers unlike Japan. I hope that the trend changes, girls should know that they are more beautiful when we can't see their big nose.

Avian flu was a unique event, like covid, not the norm. I was referring to the norm. I AM a nurse and well aware why masks are worn during surgery. The masks we used were not the cheap variety that Thais wear for pollution.

You said "You say flimsy surgical masks offfer no protection" which you are making up as I didn't say they offer "NO" protection. They offer some, but not much as air can enter from the sides.

 

As for Bkk, I specifically said "outside cities"- Bkk is, the last time I was there, a city.

I always thought it best to not see inside a kitchen of the many small Thai beach resorts I stayed at. I once had a glimpse of one and thought it better not to know in future.

As one that grew up before sterility became a big thing I probably developed some immunity from ingesting germs with my food.

 

The worst case of food poisoning I ever had in Thailand was after eating in a western style expensive restaurant that would have been expected to have a clean kitchen, and the other bad case of food poisoning was from eating at a well known fast food restaurant in a western country.

What don't you understand about the fact that surgical masks are worn primarily to protect others from being infected by the wearer and not the wearer from being infected by others.

All seems reasonable except that the Spanish H1H1₁₉₁₈ flu did eventually weaken (evolutionarily), and is now a seasonal flu after a mysterious reappearance.  The H1N1₂₀₀₉ pandemic flu is a different beast made from a weird combination of several flu viruses including H1H1, H3N2, and H1N2 precursors, though still has some influence from H1H1₁₉₁₈.  See chart below. My wife and I had H1N1₂₀₀₉ here in 2018 and it was truly breathtaking.

 

The re-emergence of the original H1H1₁₉₁₈ flu's descendants in 1977 caused the Russian/Chinese pandemic of 1977. WIKI  "Genetic analysis and several unusual characteristics of the 1977 Russian flu have prompted many researchers to speculate that the virus was released to the public through a laboratory accident or resulted from a live-vaccine trial escape"

 

SARS-2-Covid could well have a similarly complex future.

I have have mixed feelings about whether masks are helpful but I do enjoy wearing them. When I don't feel like interacting with people the mask gives me a sense of distance.

Has anyone any idea if a doctor's note or something similar in thailand (written in thai) would keep the BiB away from fleecing you every time they spot you?

Clearly ! they are so good to avoid talking to the useless people that we might bump in ! And also to avoiding being tracked by cameras.

TBH i not read the complete topic i only mention my experience .

After a few months or 1y + i don't remember , i feel naked here without it when in public . I do now have to do it and i have gone to local shop here without ( not Thailand ) but tbh , i rather now keep my mask .

I do understand and know they are a hassle and not comfy , but i feel better with it then without . I must mention i never to happy to be in crowds , or too touchy behavior to begin with .

I keep my mask , when in busier places , even when they aren't needed , i like the more shutoff feeling it brings ...

Amazing how ignorant people were to basic hygiene in the past.

 

Since we all didn't die already, amazing how unimportant new hygiene standards are.  It is nicer here / Thailand now, sitting at a table and you don't stick to it, along with less flies to swat away as you eat.
