BANGKOK (NNT) - On 14 August 2021, Miss Kanjana Suthikul, a member of “Thai Bhikkhunis”, was ordained as a female monk, by the Venerable Dhammananda Bhikkhuni, the abbess of Songdhammakalayani Monastery, in Nakhon Pathom Province of Thailand.

According to her press release, for Buddhists, the highest merit a person can make is to be ordained and offer the merit to the deceased.

Miss Kanjana says the Thai nation has a long binding relationship with Switzerland and this temple is one of few places in Thailand that is able to ordain women from around the world, who are seeking enlightenment to become a monk, including the Swiss. The temple has received endless support from Swiss believers.

After Swiss tourist, Mrs. Nicole Sauvain-Weisskopf, was murdered in Phuket province, Miss Kanjana said she wanted to express her sympathy and share the sorrow of the loss, by being ordained.

An ordination for the deceased in Thailand is believed to make merit for the death, the blessed soul will rest in peace fort eternity. Miss Kanja intends to stay in robes for 14 days.

Swiss Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Helene Budliger Artieda, attended the ordination ceremony.

Never miss a good crisis; her media presence is second-to-none and pulls out all stops not to miss a flash light ........ ????

Make merit?  I am sure the Wat would have preferred a cash contribution to their gold-leafing project.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

14 days? Wow, soooo much dedication!!! I am sure the savagely murdered woman's soul is trembling with joy. And once this news reaches Switzerland, there will be even more "endless support from Swiss believers". In the form of hard Swiss francs, no doubt.

Ridiculous.

Fair enough, that will make everything OK, erase the horrific memories from the unfortunate woman's family!

And install confidence to other single women thinking of travelling here.

Another "Thais are 'jai-dee'" story. But whether this is Miss Kanjana's real motivation, who knows...

(I'm quite sure the temple got a donation from the Swiss Ambassador out of it.)

Yes, Thai bashing and mockery of the traditions of Thailand seems to be rife on this forum. I think this is probably an honest gesture by devout and caring people trying to bring some solace to relatives. However I thought that female monks were not allowed in Thailand

Makes no sense even after my 15 trips to that country.  That woman had nothing to do with the case.  If Thailand thinks this saves face for Phuket or Thailand, well, I think they need a better cultural attache' to help explain Western cultures and perceptions to them

Songdhammakalayani Monastery, in Nakhon Pathom Province of Thailand is one of the only Buddhist temples in Thailand that actually ordains women as actual monks.  I still don't believe they are recognized by the head Buddhist honcho's in Bangkok.

This is rather interesting. A Thai monastery that can ordain female monks.

When Ajahn Brahm of western Australia did that (who had ordained under Ajahn Chah in Thailand) the King of Thailand excommunicated him ... no too long a go, and soon after donating a Buddha image to Brahm's monastery near Perth.

(Ajahn Brahm brushed that off and still encourages female ordination ...)

Surprise surprise ...

OH! For crying out loud. Religion just does nothing for me.

Desperate times for the welfare recipients. Wish I had a robe. and a rice bowl

Well maybe it is an honest gesture, but your missing the big picture Hoss. That is what happened in Phuket shows what these people really think about foreigners in this country. The sooner ya all get this the safer you shall be.

Yes  good  to  know that only men are  allowed to be monks.

And, after the term of the “ordination” expires, the merit-maker can return to peddling her puss or whatever she was doing before.
