Thailand on Monday confirmed the current lockdown measures will remain in place until August 31.

In a largely expected move, Thailand’s Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokesperson Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin said the restrictions will remain in place until at least the end of the month.

The only change to the current restrictions is that banks in shopping malls are now allowed to open.

Restaurants must remain closed to dine visitors, while other restrictions such as the night time curfew between 21.00-04.00 hrs also remain in place.

Monday’s announcement means that Bangkok and 28 other provinces remain so-called ‘dark red zones’.

Dark red provinces in Thailand

Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Chachoengsao,Chon Buri, Kanchanaburi, Lop Buri, Nakhon Nayok, Nakhon Pathom, Nakhon Ratchasima, Narathiwat, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Pattani, Phetchabun, Phetchaburi,Prachin Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Ratchaburi, Rayong, Samut Prakan, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Saraburi, Sing Buri, Songkhla, Suphan Buri, Tak and Yala.

Orange zone provinces

Bueng Kan, Krabi, Mae Hong Son, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Nan, Phang Nga, Phayao, Phrae, Phuket and Surat Thani.

This is a developing story. This post maybe updated without notice

"The only change to the current restrictions is that banks in shopping malls are now allowed to open. "

How come nobody asks "what did we achieve with this stupid idea " ?

I mean the banks inside shopping malls are closed since 2 weeks.

And ?

And now we reopen them.

So ?

What happened during those 2 weeks ? ????

The virus was successfully defeated by closing shopping malls ? Especially the banks ?

And furthermore now, if we open the banks again... then why not phone shops ? Afterall phones are "important".

My point is : this decision highlights the absurdity of the whole scheme.

Latest - news flash Thai leaky lockdown extended.

Lock down? What a joke.

People are free to travel through out this country.

Here in Khao Yai at least 2 7-11's have shut down on Monday after a weekend of BKK people traveling to this area!

Nice to see they've removed the words "at least" before 31 August. Sounds like an end is now in sight ????????

Hopefully come Aug 31 they see things are not improving and put the place under hard lockdown.

Would really annoy me to be forced to stay home for a few weeks drinking beers by the pool because the government won't allow me to go to work !!

My question also. The restrictions are not so well published in English. I guess we are not meant to know?

Limited lock-down is the key word.

Apart from bars and a few other places every high street shop, wet/dry market and street stall/vendor in my deep red zone is open as normal.

I expect they received a lot of complaints (or pressure) from people and the banks.... put a little thought into it and usually people have to go to the bank before the supermarket... makes sense to reduce the amount of contact and traveling.

Your other comment is just your silliness... had the virus been defeated they would have opened the phone shops too!

It has been clear by now that lockdowns don't help with defeating covid, as we have done lockdown for months already and its still there. And yet, all they come up with is more lockdowns.

Covid wont go away, just like the flu. Learn to live with it, or be prepared to be locked down the rest of your life.

and still no mention of a exit plan/roadmap out of lockdown.   just leave us all in limbo

The current restrictions end on 31 August.  Isn't that what they're saying?  Then we can go back to restaurants, malls and schools...

The second sentence says "at least". It's just the next date that they'll review. It seems very unlikely there'll be any significant easing at the end of this month unless the numbers have a real downturn.

A 2-3 week total lockdown, and I mean total with people allowed out of their homes for essential shopping only, would stop the spread. But that is socially and economically unacceptable so the pandemic rumbles on indefinitely. Not only in Thailand but all over the world. The virus has been a test for mankind and mankind has failed miserably in dealing with it. There have been cover-ups, denials, ineptitude right from the start, and that continues over 18 months later.

Hirakiri at it’s best. Slow a d painful. One day we realize that the damage and poverty caused will be a much bigger price to pay. Who is gonna feed the thousands of people in the coming days and months ?

And the greed of mankind continues - that’s a big part of the problem. Money needs to be made first

The real problem obviously sits HERE:

But this administration seems incompetent to manage "anything" - TIME FOR A CHANGE!

Dammit.  I missed that!  At least "at least" is not in the headline.

A 2-3 week lockdown like you describe would temporarily stop the spread, but what do you think will happen once it ends?  Lockdowns are not a long-term solution.

It's my understanding that people with the virus can only spread it for two weeks. If that had been done at the beginning then it would have been all but vanquished. But no-one took it seriously enough. Add in the fact that the head of the WHO was in China's pocket*, and we've seen the result.

*a long and brilliant article in the Sunday Times in the UK tracked how China bought their influence within the WHO while the rest of the world was sleeping. Nothing new there.
