Thailand to explore injecting coronavirus vaccines under skin

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand is studying the possibility of injecting coronavirus vaccines under the skin to try to stretch its limited supply, a health official said on Thursday, as the country races to inoculate the public faster amid a worsening epidemic.

"Our previous experience shows that intradermal injections uses 25% of a muscular injection, but triggers the same level of immunity," head of the medical science department, Supakit Sirilak told reporters.

Thailand has been reporting record deaths in recent weeks among nearly 1 million cases overall.

It has inoculated 8.3% of its population of over 66 million in a mass vaccination campaign that started in June in the midst of a battle against virulent Alpha and Delta COVID-19 variants.

But despite manufacturing vaccines for AstraZeneca and ordering enough doses of different brands to cover its population, Thailand is struggling to get supplies fast enough.

It has even sought to borrow vaccines from the Himalayan kingdom Bhutan https://reut.rs/3k8ODoE and last month became the first country in the world https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/thailand-starts-tighter-coronavirus-lockdown-around-capital-2021-07-12 to mix a Chinese coronavirus vaccine and a Western shot.

It has been using the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine as a booster for its medical personnel.

If its research confirms intradermal injections are effective, regardless of brand, Thailand could vaccinate four to five times the number of people with the same amount of vaccine, Supakit said.

AstraZeneca and Pfizer did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment about intradermal injections.

More lunacy from the desperate Just keep inventing such nonsense with no proper (tested) research Next will be mixing a vax shot with an amluet

If only they'd had time to prepare and purchase enough vaccine for everyone living in LOS.   Wait, what?!?

  • I wonder why AstraZeneca said it's for intramuscular injection only, preferably in the deltoid muscle?

Not necessarily:

Quarter-dose of Moderna COVID vaccine still rouses a big immune response

Results hint that dose stretching could help to address the world’s acute vaccine shortage.

That 100-microgram dose ultimately became the one authorized for mass use in dozens of countries. But Moderna scientists later showed that a half-dose seemed to be just as good as the standard dose at stimulating immune protection4.

Yes, just go on as usual. Never can do anything like the rest of the world. Only invent poor excuses and undermine their own peoples safety.

To be honest, I'm surprised they haven't tried that yet. Who knows, but maybe that'll be tomorrow's news?

I won't pretend to understand vaccines and dosages like a doc but if I'm 100kg and a shot is adequate for me wouldn't half a shot be adequate for a 50kg person?

Whether the moderna observation also applies to the AZ vaccine is a completely different matter. Deciding to reduce the vaccine doses on the basis of a gut feeling, without basic scientific research, is highly risky. To what extent, due to the vaccine shortage in Thailand, this is a medical or a politically motivated decision, remains questionable.

The weight does not determine the dosage as with a drug. This is because the vaccine is a local interaction.

You have to be certain as people vaccinated naturally let down their guard

Rather a shame there is not a 'smokers patch' style vaccine. You'd imagine it would be possible in todays world

It's astonishing that a country is willing to use their citizens as human guinea pigs in an effort to save money.   The vaccine manufacturers put the product through extensive trials and one of those trials is to find out what dosage is required to produced the desired immune response.

As it is they are now giving 3 shots (two of Sinovac and one of mRNA) where two shots of a good vaccine would have been sufficient.   So, now, they may give 10 million people a shot under the skin only to have to give 10 million more later.  And meanwhile the pandemic rages and the deaths continue.

I sometimes wonder just what these people are smoking.

Why not dilute the vaccine with Nam Pla and take it orally

The Netherlands has already researched 10% and 20% intradermal Moderna vaccinations and found them equally effective.

But this not "regardless of brand" as in the OP. This is a property of Moderna:

"In intradermally immunized participants, the antibody titers were 14 – 20-fold higher than that in convalescent plasma. Moreover, antibody titers detected after intradermal administration of 10/20 µg dose and intramuscular administration of 20 µg dose were equivalent to those who received 100 µg dose intramuscularly."

Article: Intradermal administration of low-dose mRNA COVID-19 vaccine induces strong immune response.

The brain will be the next place they will want to inject it !

Although from the comments over the last few months from those in a position of authority they will struggle to find one ! ????

Oh just water it down like you used to do with the premium liquors in the bars!

Did you not receive your amulet when you had your vaccination?

I can't see too many crash test dummies lining up for this experiment.

More BS from the good doctor Supakit I am 100% sure that if it were possible more advance countries in Science would have come up with this solution for goodness sake instead of wasting time and money just jab the public by making use of retired nurses and doctors as well as the military .The U.K. which has a similar population has fully vaccinated 75% of its people down to good planning whilst the Thai government are still searching on Google the meaning of the word “PLANNING “

First reaction is to laugh...but it does make sense to reflect on that

Enough vaccines have been ordered from what I understand...you are talking about the vaccines , right ?

It may make good sense to reflect on it, however it is not a "weight .mas related" dosage as some medications are. No scientific basis for the reflection.

Good thoughts, but triggering the Immune system that is the aim, i dont know but perhaps are immune systems are the same.

You can imagine what a Thai "vaccination passport" might look like:

1. Sinovac: one dose in muscle,

2. A-Z: 1/4 dose under skin,

3. Moderna: 1/8 dose in the sinus,

4. Fah Talai Jone: 60 tablets

5. Amulets: 2

6. Mor Chan app: installed.

Not had any vaccine yet - maybe I will try the amulet - oh wait a minute I am not Thai.

Thailand - always doing cheap shortcuts, selling them as inventions...

Half-expecting an announcement of airplanes seeding clouds and making it rain vaccines.
