PHUKET: The latest Phuket Provincial Public Health Office (PPHO) daily COVID situation report has marked 73 new local infections on the island yesterday (Aug 23), bringing the total number of people recognised as infected with COVID-19 in Phuket since Apr 3 to 2,725.

The PPHO report, marked as accurate as of 10:25pm last night, also marked one new case of a Phuket Sandbox tourist being confirmed as infected.

The report marked no new deaths attributed to COVID-19, leaving the total number of deaths in Phuket attributed to COVID-19 since Apr 3 at 17.

The latest map released by the PPHO showing the locations of the new infections across the island was released yesterday (Aug 22), but marked as accurate as of 6pm Sunday (Aug 22), as follows:

  • Rassada - 555 (+38)
  • Phuket Town - 547 cases
    (Talad Yai 307, +16; Talad Neua 240, +2)
  • Wichit - 284 (+14)
  • Cherng Talay - 226 (+13)
  • Patong - 138 (+1)
  • Kathu - 145 (+10)
  • Thepkrasattri - 115 (+1)
  • Chalong - 109 (+3)
  • Srisoonthorn - 110 (+8)
  • Koh Kaew - 80 (+5)
  • Rawai - 72 (+4)
  • Karon - 40
  • Kamala - 38 (+1)
  • Pa Khlok - 30 (+5)
  • Mai Khao - 25 (+2)

The 73 new local infections bring the total number of new local infections on the island to a new record of 685 in the past seven days, as follows:

  • Aug 17 - 43 new cases
  • Aug 18 - 89 new cases
  • Aug 19 - 129 new cases
  • Aug 20 - 101 new cases
  • Aug 21 - 126 new cases
  • Aug 22 - 124 new cases
  • Aug 23 - 73 new cases

The PPHO report, marked as accurate as of 10:25pm last night, also marked one new case of a Phuket Sandbox tourist being confirmed as infected.

On which test? First, second, third test? The tourist was in contact with one of the 73 local infections while in sandbox?

So long as daily "case counts" (regardless of their lethality or hospitalization) make headlines and help determine policy, we'll be in this situation for the rest of our time on Earth.

I wonder how many tourists are still there?

800 maybe?

Yes, going forward and looking to the future, the number of "cases" will become less relevant compared to actual hospitalizations and deaths.

While vaccines don't completely block the transmission of the virus from one person to the next, they are very effective at preventing serious illness and death, which makes focusing on hospitalizations and deaths preferable to tracking "cases".  Without a weapon to eliminate transmission, this virus will be with us for a very long time. A recent study at Oxford University has found that current vaccines are less than 50% effective in blocking the transmission of the Delta variant, and the effectiveness in blocking any future variants is obviously unknown.

A similar virus (in terms of constantly evolving variants) is influenza. In the US, the CDC estimated 61,000 deaths during the 2017/2018 flu season, (about .02% of the population), and 800,000 hospitalizations (about .25% of the population). Currently, there have been 630,000 Covid-19 deaths in the US, or about 10 times the number of influenza deaths in a single season.  No testing or tracking of influenza "cases" is performed.

The article also mentions another 83 "suspected" cases via ATK.

And no mention of the number of tests performed.

The report posted last night recorded 83 new cases of people suspected of being infected with COVID-19 after testing positive by antigen test kits (ATKs) yesterday (Aug 23).

Despite the 83 new suspected cases, which have yet to be confirmed by RT-PCR tests, the total number of people now currently held at ‘COVID-19 Care Centers’ across the island fell from 447 on Sunday to 444 reported yesterday (-3).

The report did not confirm how many people who tested positive by ATKs were confirmed infected by RT-PCR tests or how many people had been released from ATK detention at ‘COVID-19 Care Centers’ and allowed to go home.

This can be difficult to find out, and I find when it is available, it tends to lag a bit other information provided.

Here are some image/charts showing Phuket testing status as of 23-August (114,158 from 1-April start date? )  and 24-August (114,610 from 1-April start date?).  ie from 23-to-24-August there was 114,610 minus 114,158 = 452 ... ie 452 tests done in the one day.   I think this total of 452 tests does not include "New entrants (ATK+) proactively checked CI = 79 cases" where these who tested positive will be tested again - BUT I could have that WRONG as I don't fully understand this.

For those of us expatriates who are very curious, it would be nice to see more detailed English language reporting by the English language news on # of tests conducted.
