Police are now raiding bars for illegally selling alcohol. Photo: Phuket Provincial Police

PHUKET: After bars in Patong had been selling alcohol to visitors for over a month, police have moved in to start charging venue operators for breach of the provincial order banning the sale of alcohol.

The move flies in the face of the tacit permission granted by the Patong Police and Patong Municipality, with bars along Bangla Rd open and selling alcohol.

It also comes more than a week after Weerawit Kreuasombat, President of the Patong Entertainment Business Association (PEBA), publicly admitted that some bars were breaking the provincial order ‒ but with tacit permission from the Patong Police and Patong Municipality.

  • And the brown envelopes will have to become even bigger now.   This is how you attract tourists. Excellent move of the clowns in charge.

Also according to the report, officers “had learned from the news that [the bar] was secretly selling alcoholic beverages to tourists”. Apparently Patong Police officers had no idea this was happening on Bangla Rd until a news report was published.

Why oh why did they feel the need to announce they were breaking the rules. That forced police to take action.

needed to pay a special "fee" ?

I should be the little <deleted>, to share those news to all those travel agencies, claiming Thailands borders are open.

Thailand doesn't deserve foreign tourists

Mass stupidity can end up being dangerous if you have enough in the herd

can someone explain to authorities the difference between, "Thailand wants tourists" vs Tourists want (to go to) Thailand"?

Selective policing it seems, going by the comments on the source article. Why some bars should be hit and others not I'll leave to your imagination, just luck of the draw, eh!  Anyway, some sort of token action was inevitable after Mr. Weerawit's rather ingenuous comments.

For someone that has loved Thailand for a very long time, this is real hit head on wall stuff. I know why it probably happened, but if the officials don't care about the image they are sending in a connected world, they are all going to be worse off.

What does Mr Prayut have to say about this heinous crime?

Two days ago I counted 15 bars open on Bangla and saw police were stationed at each end of the street.

It's *shocking* that they didn't check whether the paper cups in the other 14 bars had alcohol.

You have to wonder if this alcohol ban in bars and restaurants is more than a covid excuse.

Im starting to think it is more revenge from PM asking big drinks companies for handouts to make him look good and them not giving him any money and then them going and feeding the poor etc themselves.
Bit of bitter revenge if you ask me !

Feels like it when the cousins come over for a swim.

The funny thing is at the end of Bangla road on the beach front is a police box tell me they didn't see anything suspicious for the last month?

Maybe because the cases are 200+ a day and the 9 covid investigation teams are hitting Phuket very soon, if they are not already there.  However, the sandbox is not doing well in the eyes of doctors or the public and hence the delay in using the same model at this point as of October 1st for the rest of Thailand.  Seems that they want to get it right before the rest of the country ends up with the same issues as being seen through regular glasses and not rose colored ones.

Luckily people only come to Thailand for temples and floating markets so they won't be put off from coming by this.

Expect transfers to HQ.

They probably suspected a pandemic of 10pm bendy leg syndrome

This da.ned covid 19 has really ripped the guts out of Phuket.

Made worse by a government that can't seem to get a mass vaccination program rolled out.

I ride/drive to Patong almost every day early morning for gym and the place is pretty much a ghost town (same when I leave to ride north at 10'ish). Its so sad to see, regularly, the lines of people waiting for food handouts on second road. Breaks my heart.

So the PEBA felt the need to announce they were violating the rules because of an investigation team hitting Phuket.

Sorry, this makes no sense.

I'm not sure continuing news about police cleaning up places serving alcohol will increase tourists' interest in entering the available sandbox-areas...????

Self surrender so the hit was not as bad maybe.  Sort of like "hey dad I borrowed the car last night, nicked the fender by accident but already called the body shop" just a thought.

Nice attempt, no cigar.

More like announcing to the police: I burgled a house yesterday, and tonight I'm going to do it again. He should have kept his mouth shut.

As usual on opposites in our views. Agreeing to disagree as usual.  Enjoy the day.

I feel such a Guinness crim now always sat at the back of the pub just in case a general strode into town and arrested everything in sight..

I always had an eye on where to sling my £6.50 pint should I see glint of a thousand badges bursting through the door ????
