I understand that most international schools require 2 years post PGCE (or equivalent) before they hire you. Does anyone know if it is possible to do your NQT year at a school with a British curriculum in Thailand? 
 

I’m studying in Scotland so it’s only one year post certificate in order to become fully registered. I would really love to do my probation year in Thailand, but it would need to be a Uk government approved school. 
 

Does anyone know if this is possible? 
 

I would have my PGDE and I also have an Msc Education. What kind of salary should I look for, or should I just think myself lucky to be accepted as a NQT?!

It's unfortunately a case of yes, but actually no.

 

You could complete the NQT induction outside the UK is if you worked at a registered British School Overseas (BSO).

 

But in reality the number of accredited British School Overseas in Thailand is very small.

The 'big' British international schools like Bangkok Patana, Shrewsbury, Harrow etc don't even bother with BSO,  and they aren't interested in hiring NQTs.

 

The few international schools that do have BSO don't usually even have the NQT mentor or procedures in place. I'm pretty sure the likes of St Stephens or Traill won't haven't taken a single teacher through their induction period. I do know St Andrews Samakee has helped NQTs in the past but they are a small school and their turnover is very minimal, so they don't hire very often.

 

What subject do you teach?

 

Unless you teach in some very niche specialist subject and they really needed you, the chances of you getting a BSO willing to hire you and induct you....the odds are against it.

Ok, thank you for your insight on this. Sadly I don’t teach anything niche or specialized, just regular primary! 
 

I noticed on St Andrew’s and Traill’s websites that they mention hiring NQTs, but if the infrastructure perhaps isn’t there then I’ll just have to suck it up and deal with another Scottish winter!

I rcommend to stay where you are for 2-3 years and build up your experience and resume. The big schools in Bkk get literally hundreds of applications - and dozens from people with 10+ years experience. The very high salaries these schools can pay attracts them. 

 

Besides, now is not the best time to come, considering the pandemic and all.

To be clear, i wouldn't be looking to move until the beginning of the next academic year and so i'm hoping that things may have calmed down a little by then with regards to the pandemic.... that said, any port in a storm, perhaps i would be better off hunkering down here!
