Thailand on Thursday (October 21) reported 9,727 new COVID-19 cases, 10,075 recoveries and 73 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

▶︎ Total infections since April 1: 1,792,716

▶︎ Total recoveries since since April 1: 1,672,508

Thursday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 1,821,579 with 18,559 deaths.

The news comes as Thai government officials on Wednesday inspected the readiness of the country's airports to welcome quarantine-free travellers, due to return next month after almost two years of strict COVID-19 rules that halted vital tourism.

From Nov. 1, the country will allow vaccinated arrivals from low risk countries to return to its popular destinations like Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Bangkok.

Tourism before the pandemic was a leading driver of the economy, accounting for 12% of GDP. But the tourism authority has forecast foreign arrivals will drop to just 100,000 this year, down from 40 million in 2019 before the pandemic struck.

Hats off to Vietnam.

Figures have been consistently low for several days now.

Today under 900 cases and 28 deaths. @anchadian table above.

The Government needs to monitor Viet tourism very closely. As Thailand's biggest local competitor for inbound tourism, there needs to be attention paid to entry requirements and how and where they are being applied. What works in attracting tourists most and what deters them from coming.

Three markets in Chiang Mai locked down for three days of disinfection

Chiang Mai’s adjacent Waroros, Ton Lamyai and flower markets have been closed down for three days, starting today (Thursday), for disinfection, while surrounding areas have been placed under maximum watch for 14 days after 37 people, mostly traders, were found to be infected with COVID-19.

Meanwhile, health officials have begun mass vaccinations of traders and porters at the three markets and conducted COVID-19 tests, with rapid antigen test kits (ATKs), during the 3-day lockdown.

Well it looks like they are moving right along with vaccinations.  Spent half the day today running back to Med Park hospital to get a Vaccination certificate that the Disease control folks will accept for the International Vaccination Certificate I applied for through the new Mor Prom App portal.  The hospital was busy with providing vaccinations for folks as they have been for the past few months.

Talking with the Hospital Gal in charge of obtaining and printing the certificates, I was told that many folks who were given the original certificates have returned to obtain the new updated vaccine certificates.  She was very candid and was annoyed that Thailand has not moved forward in this digital age and is still stuck in the loop of collecting paperwork which the Government already has access to.

So that you folks know the new certificate looks almost like the one you can download and that you see on the Mor Prom App for yourself, However, this one has an actual QR Code that works unlike the Mor Prom app certificate I downloaded after my last vaccination in September, and has some other information in the middle section.  Now I understand why the folks running the International Certificate program through the app wanted a new certificate themselves for use in processing my appointment in order to obtain my International Certificate. Funny how as the Gal at the hospital explained, they all have access to the vaccination records.  Just more hurdles to negotiate.

Not sure if Thailand will reach the 70% threshold by the end of the year as they wanted, but it seems that it will not stop them from opening up the country.

Prepare for the worst and expect the best I guess.  Stay safe, watch where you go and of course take the precautions necessary to ensure you do not become one of the statistics.

Won't see many more official cases from there then if using ATK unless folks get sick enough to be admitted to hospital.

It is much nearer to 20 % of GDP

Luckily, the other sources that create 88% of GDP fair pretty well, so far.  So, why to worry too much about Pattaya, Phuket, Hua Hin? The majority of the Thai population live somewhere else. Perhaps the money for the overinvested tourism facilities could be used for some other purposes more useful for the population.

And some of the 12% of the tourism will still be maintained by Thai people and the other residents.

Think your lost. Officially it's 12%, while unofficially it is closer to 30%

Maybe because foreign tourism is an export i.e. money brought into the country.
